Today we’d like to introduce you to Nuria Bonilla Handrop.
Hi Nuria, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Since I was a little girl, I knew I wanted to be a teacher. I always had role models in my family who were teachers, and I loved listening to their achievements and how they could change kids’ lives with their job. I thought it was amazing, and it also sounded like so much fun. It was when it came time for me to decide what to study as a career that I found out that a Special Education degree existed, and I knew it was for me. I wanted to help students and their families to be included in society. After 7 years of teaching in the classroom, I realized that I wanted to help students in a more personalized way, to assist them in advancing their learning skills. That’s how I started Eco Kids Crea, Descubre y Aprende LLC, where I now focus on helping bilingual families who are raising children with proficiency in both Spanish and English. They need a community where they can feel proud of being bilingual. All of this is accomplished through my personalized and group tutoring, which is also inclusive of neurodiversity.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Ever since I started my business, there have been struggles and obstacles that led me to pause for a short time due to changes in my life. I have had to evolve my business to meet my needs and those of my clients. Recently, I became a mom and wanted to stay at home to raise my child, but I didn’t want to give up Eco Kids since I knew how much my students needed me. That was when I learned that your business can adapt to you as the business owner as long as you stay true to your mission, values, and ethics.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I specialize in tutoring bilingual students whose native language is Spanish, helping them navigate the process of adapting to their new language, which is English. Additionally, I primarily work with neurodiverse students who require extra assistance in achieving their educational goals and whose parents seek guidance in continuing their education and practicing school content at home. Recently, I have immersed myself and my business in assisting the homeschooling Latino community, and I am thoroughly enjoying it. It’s a true honor to support parents who have chosen to educate their children at home and to serve as a guide for both them and their children.
All of my classes are personalized for my students, whether working one-on-one or in very small groups. This level of personalization prioritizes their conditions and adapts to their needs. By having such personalized classes, I can have a very special connection with each of my students and their families, which is incredibly important to accompany them on this path of education; it truly makes a difference.
Throughout the years of working with numerous families and their children, I have come to understand the significance of empathy, stepping into someone else’s shoes, and practicing self-patience. At Eco Kids Crea Descubre y Aprende, we strive to provide a secure and professional environment where we guide your children based on their individual pace of development, free from any pressures or judgments. Our approach is rooted in understanding, respect, patience, and love.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Don’t let problems and obstacles bring you down; there’s always a way to turn them around and transform them into learning opportunities.
