Today, we’d like to introduce you to Shay Mechelle.
Hi Shay, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Walking into my purpose as a professional makeup artist started after I launched my very own makeup brand in 2016. I ran a successful cosmetics business for 5 years before having to put my business on hold due to the traumatic impact of Covid.
Fast forward to today, I decided to put my sole focus on servicing my clients for their makeup needs. While building my clientele of makeup clients, I decided to share different techniques and tips for those who were aspiring to be successful makeup artists like myself.
I took on TikTok’s platform and quickly became a follower. I now have a community of over 12k followers that I have built a great bond together and share fun times and laughters when I’m on and off camera. The genuine community that has gravitated to me keeps me going on a day-to-day basis!
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Being a professional makeup artist comes with its ups and downs, just as any business does. However, the main downfall of being a makeup artist is your downtime. When there are no clients or slow bookings, you must find more ways to make up the revenue loss.
It’s easier said than done when sometimes pride can stand in the way. I’m often offered help or donations but sometimes decline because I’m so used to being the giver and ensuring I bring a smile to everyone’s face. Those would be the struggles for me.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe you can tell us more about your work next?
I’ve been in several features with my makeup artistry. Makeup is a great passion of mine which I’ve turned into a profession.
Like most say, when it’s something you love to do, it doesn’t feel like work. As a professional makeup artist, I specialize in natural glam. I am most proud of being able to be a part of a great organization like Project Beauty here in Dallas, which has helped young girls, the less fortunate, those who have different illnesses, and even battered women feel beautiful about themselves.
My motto is “Enhancing The Beauty That’s Already There!” I feel what sets me apart from most makeup artists is my taking my time, getting to know my clients, their skin type, any allergic reactions to products, listening to what type of look they want, and perhaps, if needed, offering my take on what I would suggest.
I take my time with each client, building a bond, and I leave them with small gifts!
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you, and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Yes, I’ve learned a lot of lessons due to COVID because it caused a lot of changes in most businesses and the following of CDC guidelines when it comes to prevention or the spread of COVID.
It helped me become more aware as a business owner and educated me even more on the do’s and don’ts of running a business during a pandemic.
