Today, we’d like to introduce you to Peggy Lohr.
Hi Peggy, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was born and raised in Dallas. My parents loved music and movies, so they were a big part of my family life. I took piano, voice, acting, drawing, and trumpet lessons. By the time I was 8, I dreamed of going to Hollywood as a famous singer.
While at The University of Texas in Austin, I joined choirs, went on international trips performing, and met musicians in the jazz department at UT. Together, these musicians and I started our professional careers in Austin. This included club gigs, cruise lines, and studio work, such as singing commercials. In the mid-1970s, I moved back to Dallas and continued performing.
In 1981, I moved to Hollywood. I worked for famous songwriters, did clubs and private parties, sang for the Oscars, married, and had two sons. In 1994, the L.A. earthquake scared us outta there. We went to Branson to perform with The Lawrence Welk group. In 1999, I moved back to Dallas. I continued to perform, and I started to teach for 17 years. Today, I am a retired teacher who still loves to perform!
Let’s dig deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
It was not always smooth, but it was mostly a LOT of fun. I’ve written all about it in my new memoir, Howdy Hollywood (available on Amazon).
I’ve had clubs break contracts with my bands. I’ve had periods where work was slim. I’ve auditioned for and not gotten the part. But mostly, I consider myself a very lucky person! I truly feel that I win or learn! No losing accepted!
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a singer. I sing jazz gigs, pop gigs, Cabaret gigs… or I can write an original show for you. I feel like that has been the secret to my long ( over 50 years) career.
Like most girl singers I know, I especially love to sing ballads. I was hired by a lot of famous songwriters because they enjoyed the way I told the story through my songs. I’m not afraid to share my deepest feelings with my audiences. I think that is what sets me apart from other singers.
In my career, I am most proud of the fact that I’ve kept the career going for so long… so that I can do what I love to do in life… sing!
We love surprises, fun facts, and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
A lot of people do not know that I love to write songs and parodies. I can really create anything someone wants for their special occasion or their special person! I also want people to know that I love performing but hate “hustling” gigs.
I’d love to have a good agent who’d find more gigs for me… especially in north Dallas, Plano, or Frisco. I can usually fill up a club with my fans… so my husband and I should be in big demand! My husband is an incredible pianist who was recently named Dallas Jazz Artist of the Year!
