Today we’d like to introduce you to Javier Tamez.
Hi Javier, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Growing up in Monterrey N.L. Mexico, my artistic journey was greatly influenced by the city’s vibrant cultural tapestry. Surrounded by a diverse array of artistic expressions such as elegant statues, intricate cathedrals, dynamic graffiti and street art, and thought-provoking art museums, I found myself captivated by the power of visual storytelling.
This early exposure laid the foundation for my passion for art and ignited a creative fire within me. The sights and sounds of Monterrey fueled my imagination and inspired me to explore various artistic techniques and styles.
Upon moving to Texas, I seized the opportunity to immerse myself in the local art scene. Working at an art school and gallery for 14 years provided me with invaluable experience, allowing me to refine my skills, learn from seasoned artists, and connect with fellow art enthusiasts.
Through dedication, hard work, and a deep-seated love for the craft, I ventured into the world of tattooing. Today, I stand as a proud tattoo artist and owner of Cedar Hollows Tattoo in Arlington, Tx., blending my cultural roots with contemporary influences to create unique and meaningful designs for my clients. My journey from Monterrey to Texas reflects not only a physical migration but also a creative evolution that continues to shape my identity as an artist.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Initially, juggling the demands of an apprenticeship while holding down a full-time job and raising a family proved to be a formidable task. The relentless pursuit of honing tattooing skills alongside existing responsibilities required immense dedication and time management.
Subsequently, transitioning from the security of working at an established tattoo shop to venturing out on my own posed a new set of hurdles. Learning the intricacies of managing a business, from financial aspects to marketing strategies, entailed a steep learning curve. The leap of faith to establish Cedar Hollows Tattoo was met with uncertainties and risks, yet the passion for the art of tattooing and the vision for creating a unique studio fueled the determination to overcome these challenges.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My expertise lies in Black & Grey, Color Surrealism, Florals, Cover-ups, and Fix-up tattoos. One of my greatest joys is collaborating with clients to transform their visions into reality while building lasting relationships with them. Our studio is dedicated to providing a welcoming atmosphere where clients feel at home, ensuring a relaxed and enjoyable experience throughout their tattoo journey.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
During the COVID-19 pandemic, I seized the opportunity to participate in online seminars and practice on fake skin to refine my tattooing skills. When I wasn’t tattooing, I immersed myself in painting and designing. This period taught me the invaluable lesson that life can change in an instant. It emphasized the importance of staying adaptable and prepared for the next steps on my journey.
