Meet Shauntay Shipp of Thirsty Cupcake in Far North

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shauntay Shipp.

Shauntay, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started Thirsty Cupcake in 2012, right after my son was born. I wanted to create a business where I could stay home and be a mother, while being a real estate agent. Thirsty Cupcake started as drink themed cupcakes. On my sons 1st birthday, I tried my hand at a custom cake and it was like magic happened! Being a very artsy, hands on person, as well as a longtime baker, it all just seemed to make sense!

Through the years, I have taught myself different skills and techniques. Only doing cakes part time, I decided to pursue by cake business full time in April of 2015. Soon after, I secured my first celebrity cake through a friend of mine. From there, I began to do more celebrity cakes in the Dallas area. My first post of a Popular shoe cake I made went completely viral and more business began to flood in.

This year, I was sought out to film for a major television network and some amazing things are approaching for Thirsty a Cupcake!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been so many obstacles through this journey! I have almost given up so many times. From the long hours, to financial drops, to taking time away from my son. It has truly been a balancing act. My driving force is my son. For that reason, I have been able to push through all the obstacles. Though I may work 16-18 hour days, it is worth it!

Please tell us about Thirsty Cupcake.
My company specializes in making events more memorable. When a client screams, gasps and/or cry because they love their cake, it goes beyond the design and taste. I love providing an experience. That alone is what I feel sets me apart from the competitor. I dig into personalities of my clients and ask questions that matter. I create pieces that they can look at and see themselves in. That will be more memorable next year or for their next event then just a cute cake.

I am also known for my detail. I love making cakes look real! Detail is important in custom pieces and is just another element that is used to wow my clients!

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory from my childhood would be going to California for the first time with my uncle. We spent two weeks in Modesto/San Francisco. It was the first time that I realized he beauty outside. I was 15 years old. I told myself that when I grew up, I would move to California and I did.
