Small Business of the Day: Conversations with Aj Byrd of Flourish With Aj

Today’s Small Business of the Day features an interview with Aj Byrd. Please find our conversation below.

We’re thrilled to have the chance to ask you some fun questions today, but before we get started, can you introduce Flourish With Aj to our readers.
My name is Aj Byrd, and although I do many things, I am a natural hairstylist and loctician, now located in North Dallas. ‘Flourish with Aj’ is a mini natural hair salon that services women, men, and children that tends to and takes care of naturally loose and loc’d hair. I specialize in locs but can also braid, twist, coil, and service other protective styles. I ensure that I am authentically myself while creating a comfortable workspace that feels right to me with decorations, lights, plants, incense, and music. As my clients’ hair flourishes, so do I, along with the relationships we build. Because I build strong relationships, most of my clientele comes from word-of-mouth referrals. Clients love my business because of the work that I do and my care for natural hair. I would not have made it this far into my business without those who support me and continuous bookings. For that, I am grateful wholeheartedly.

What is the most important lesson you’ve learned building your business that you can share with those just starting out in their entrepreneurial journey?
I’ve learned a few lessons when building my business. There will always be obstacles and challenges; you just have to find an effective way around them. I want to say that goes for any business you want to start, and that’s also life. Entrepreneurship isn’t easy, and once you understand that you will experience obstacles and challenges, no matter how big or small, that can be motivating to push through.

To be a successful entrepreneur, stay up to date. That includes updating techniques, tools, styles, management, incentives, content, and anything else you can think of. Stay in the know and be knowledgeable about your business.

Build relationships with people you feel comfortable with. When you build positive relationships, you can boost and expand your business, making people more likely to choose you over competitors. Trust and networking can get your business in higher places.
