Today we’d like to introduce you to Dj Jay Slade
Hi DJ Jay Slade , so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
When I was attending Texas A&M there weren’t many DJs working outside the club and the ones that were weren’t that good so anytime I went to a house party I would be on the aux or throw my own events and be on the aux there too. At the end of my freshman year I got invited to an upperclassmen party and whoever was playing music off YouTube was not good at all so I asked if I could step in. So I got the crazy idea to split the screen of the browser on the laptop and have 2 YouTube channels open and just mix the songs by ear. The party was turnt! Everybody has a great time and seeing the control I had over the crowd was truly surreal. I realized that I had a true ear for music and I wanted to get paid for it. So my next idea was to become a DJ since I did so well with the 2 YouTube channels. I posted on Twitter that I’d be DJn next semester and by the end of that week I had 3 gigs booked! I still didn’t know how to DJ so I ending up buying very cheap equipment from another DJ and practiced everyday that summer just pressing buttons and learning so much teaching myself all the technical terms that comes with DJn. When I got to my first party I was so anxious but the result was amazing and since then I knew I had something special.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has definitely not been a smooth road, being from Dallas but starting my DJ career in College Station a lot of people don’t think I’m even from the city lol. So making connections in my own city have definitely been difficult but not impossible. Another thing that has been difficult is learning the business side of being a DJ. It’s really been a self taught process through and through but I wouldn’t trade my journey for anyone else’s.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I like to consider myself a jack of all trades. I’m done all types of work from construction to electrical to independent contract work. I don’t think I can ever have just one thing on my plate because I like to have my hands in a lot of things. I take pride in the work I do because I put my all into it whatever it is. Thera nothing I can’t do with a little time and YouTube University lol.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I just love music so much. When I was little my dad used to call me “Radio” because I knew every song that came on the radio. I love being a DJ as well it’s been a great experience and I’m looking forward to my growth and journey ahead.
