Inspiring Conversations with Annie Cavalier, Ms, Rdn, Ld of My Healthful Life

Today we’d like to introduce you to Annie Cavalier, Ms, Rdn, Ld

Hi Annie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I have been interested in health and wellness from a young age, but it quickly became a passion when my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer when I was only 12 years old. From that point on, my entire family really started paying attention to what we put into our bodies. Because I was so young at the time, this had a very profound effect on me and changed my life in more ways than I ever could have imagined.

I went on to receive my bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nutrition and became a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist. While I was still on college, I started having so many people come to me asking questions about nutrition and how they could improve their overall health, so I decided to create My Healthful Life as a platform where I could share my nutrition tips, healthy recipes, and more. I have since had the pleasure of also teaming up with other companies and non-profit organizations to write nutrition articles and eBooks on a variety of different topics.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There have definitely been some struggles and learning curves along the way. For instance, my background and education are very science-based, so I had a lot to learn bout marketing, social media, website design/maintenance, and so much more! I am definitely still learning too! I also work full time with patients in the hospital as a clinical dietitian, so it is sometimes hard to find the time to work on nutrition writing and recipe development, which is what I enjoy the most.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about My Healthful Life?
I think one of the things that sets My Healthful Life apart from other nutrition websites is that I am definitely a foodie! That is why it is my mission to help people learn that healthy food does not have to be bland or boring. It can be full of flavor something that you really love. All of my recipes are very plant-forward and I encourage my readers to add a protein of their choice.

As a registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN), I specialize in nutrition. Unfortunately, really anyone can put out information about nutrition and other health-related topics, but they may or may not be a reliable source. Because I am also a licensed healthcare provider, I am very careful to make sure that everything I publish is backed by research, and I include references in all of the articles and eBooks I publish. I also really enjoy talking about nutrition hot-topics and setting the record straight on nutrition myths.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
In addition to running My Healthful Life, I also work as a clinical dietitian at one of the largest acute-care hospitals in Dallas. As a result, I have worked first-hand with more COVID patients than I can even count. Something that really struck me was how much more people started to care about nutrition and their health during the course of the pandemic. Not only were the COVID patients I was working with struggling with their nutrition due to lack of appetite, changes in taste, or in the more severe cases, because they were on tube feeding, but even those not currently struggling with COVID were wanting to be as healthy as possible so that if they did catch COVID, they would have better outcomes. So I suppose one silver-lining to the pandemic is that people really did start to take greater interest in their health and how they fuel their bodies.
