Today we’d like to introduce you to Jesus Torres.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jesus. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’m originally from Mexico, my parents and I emigrated to the states when I was 14 years old. It was definitely a challenging adaptation, as I came to complete my HS diploma plus learn a total different language. After high school, I wanted to pursue my dream and obtain my cosmetology license, but times & finances were rough and had to let it pass at that time. Pretty frustrating, however, I never let that dream escaped my mind. I worked other industries after that, restaurants, real estate, retail etc. After going in circles and trying to find my happy place, I decided to finally go to where my passion was, and attended the Aveda Institute in Dallas. It was a wonderful experience and felt great to be working towards the dream of my life. I worked at Aveda Salons after that. I completely love what I do for living, from being behind the chair to the special connection you get to share with clients; in my opinion you touch someone’s life on a daily basis. Working in the salon atmosphere, some experiences were great and some not as pleasant. But I always had the passion for owning my own studio and provide my own version of an impeccable customer service experience. Now that I have opened my own hair studio feels pretty rewarding to see all my clients’ support, loyalty and positive feedback about this decision I’ve made for myself and my career. I keep working, day by day wanting to one day, open my own hair salon. It will take time and hard work but keeping consistency and love for what I do, will take me there.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I personally feel like one of my biggest challenges was the financial aspect, back when I couldn’t pursue my dream because of the same reason. As a hairstylist working in the salon atmosphere, I feel like the tension from owners and coworkers can at times be a little discouraging. That occurred to me, however I never let anybody or anything made me lose my passion nor my beliefs towards what I do for living.
So, let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Icon Hair Studio story. Tell us more about the business.
I do love and perform hair color, hair cutting and styling. For both, my ladies and gentlemen. I don’t like to say I specialize, but I feel like I’ve have exceeded my own expectations for blonde looks, highlights & balayages. In my studio, I love to pamper all my guests. For my guys, they get a complimentary express facial, since they usually don’t get the same blow drying part in their service, as my ladies do. I also offer a referral program, where my clients get complimentary hair styling products for referring their friends/family to me. And of course, there will always be complimentary beverages, from a warm green tea, to a tasty glass of wine, the experience it’s all about my clients.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I usually like to say that I don’t believe in luck, I usually say it’s called blessings and rewards from hard work & consistency. But I do have to say that this part has gone on my favor because I work hard, I’m honest, accommodating and vulnerable to the people around me, from friends to my clients.
