Conversations with Carla Pettway

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carla Pettway

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My story begins with my relocation to Texas in 2001 to join my family, who had moved here from Alabama in 1998. Fast forward to 2010: I suddenly found myself unemployed from my corporate job. A friend of my husbands suggested I consider a career in makeup, since I had recently helped him on a photoshoot applying makeup. The only problem was, I didn’t actually know what I was doing. With all the new free time on my hands, I decided to follow our friends suggestion. So I got busy and dove into researching how to become a makeup artist, build a kit, took classes, and worked on refining my technique. What began as a simple idea, turned into a thriving freelance business, specializing in natural and soft glam makeup for weddings, birthdays, photoshoots, etc.

Through my makeup business, I’ve made some wonderful connections with women of all ages and backgrounds, built lasting friendships, and even developed other business ventures—all from my work as a makeup artist. Fourteen years later, I’m still working as a freelance MUA part-time, but this business has expanded to my new passion as a lifestyle content creator.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Becoming a freelance MUA without a mentor or roadmap was challenging at times. I often felt uncertain, doubted my talent, and felt overwhelmed juggling the business while also re-entering the workforce. At one point, it was definitely a lot to handle.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m known for helping women look and feel beautiful naturally. Many women want to embrace makeup but are often hesitant because they associate it with looking unnatural or feeling unlike themselves. I believe my superpower that sets me apart from others is my ability to show these women that makeup can enhance their features in a subtle, empowering way that feels authentic. My goal is to make them feel confident and beautiful—like themselves, only more radiant.

I’m proud of the contributions I’ve made to the beauty industry, and I’m especially proud that I’ve stayed true to my makeup style and never compromised my approach. My focus has always been to enhance beauty naturally, allowing my clients to feel confident and authentically themselves.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I believe the qualities that have contributed most to my success are my authenticity, approachability, and friendly nature. These traits have helped me build lasting friendships and keep clients coming back. Being genuine and welcoming allows me to create a comfortable space where clients feel valued and appreciated.
