Today we’d like to introduce you to Chef Darnell Gooch
Hi Chef Darnell, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I began my culinary adventure at around 10 or 11 years old, inspired by Emeril on the Food Network. I experimented with different flavors and spices in the kitchen, honing my skills while cooking for my younger sisters. My love for cooking remained strong as I grew older, even as my life took unexpected paths. Although I felt a deep connection to cooking since childhood, various life circumstances often pulled me away during my formative years. I explored several careers, including automotive mechanic training, HVAC specialist, CDL driver, and City of Dallas code compliance officer. Despite always learning and striving for progress, I often felt unfulfilled and struggled with a sense of belonging.
While balancing work and family responsibilities, I experienced a sense of unfulfillment. After settling down and starting a family, I was able to reconnect with the kitchen. Cooking for my family allowed me to rediscover my passion for cooking and rekindle the spark I once felt as a child, bringing new purpose to my life. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I made the bold decision to turn my passion into a business called Gooch’s Kajun Fried Turkey, a seasonal turkey frying venture that enabled me to share my flavors with family and friends. Gooch’s Kajun Fried turkey’s evolved into Gooch’s Fried Chicken (GFC) in 2021, renowned for its popular Stuff Fried Whole Chickens featuring signature flavors that pay homage to my family and community such as the “Bishop Bird, ” The OG,” and my personal favorite, “the Red Bird.” Gooch Fried Chicken started off well, however, I soon realized that cooking for enjoyment and cooking for business requires a different skill knowledge than I’d acquired.
Consequently, I temporarily ceased operations with GFC to pursue higher education in Culinary Arts at Dallas College. Throughout my time in college, I have encountered numerous opportunities and gained invaluable knowledge. In 2023, I participated in my first food competition and secured second place in the rice/noodle category at World Food Championship. This achievement was a highlight and pivotal moment for me and affirmed my calling in cooking. I have been fortunate to meet and cook with celebrity chefs, partake in events throughout the city, and collaborate with some of the finest chefs in the city. I plan to complete my AAS in Culinary Arts by May 2025. Indeed, cooking has become my compass in life and I’m ready to broaden my horizon!
I have reinvented myself as Chef D. Gooch, the force behind Gooch’s Kitchen & Catering, where I specialize in a fusion of Creole and Southern cuisines.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Throughout my journey, I have faced numerous challenges. As the eldest child of a single teenage mother, we encountered significant financial and systemic hurdles, which forced me to mature quickly and learn important lessons through experience, often through failures. I struggled with dropping out of high school and grappled with identity issues, including understanding who I truly am, discovering my purpose, and finding direction in life, alongside frequent incarcerations. I found myself caught in toxic relationships and distanced from those who mattered most to me. The pandemic felt like a double-edged sword; it offered me the chance to dream, seek inspiration, and visualize my goals, but the limitations at that time disrupted my plans for a new business venture, leading to financial strain as I tried to balance household expenses with investing in my business. Despite these obstacles, I persevered and found direction and fulfillment in cooking, with my culinary achievements reflecting my resilience and commitment. God has Tipped the Plate for me and opened doors I never thought possible. I am forever grateful for His blessings!
