Community Highlights: Meet Tisa Zellers of Sage Fine Flowers

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tisa Zellers

Hi Tisa, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I got started at a local mom-and-pop flower shop in Irving. I was in my second year of college at The University of Dallas, and just returned from a semester in Rome. I saw amazing artwork and stunning gardens while there, and really became interested in art and nature. Working at a flower shop was a great way to relax after class. I always tell people that I got a degree in Philosophy, so naturally became a florist!

No matter where I found myself over the next 20 or so years, I would always come back to flowers. I was very fortunate to work for Zen – the in-house floral studio for the Mansion on Turtle Creek and The Crescent. I was able to work on amazing projects there, which made me want to specialize in luxury events. Upon leaving Zen, I was one of the first designers hired by Dallas fashion icon, Brian Bolke, to work at AvantGarden. I later worked for Todd Events, as well, taking part in selling and designing high-profile weddings and events.

In 2014 I decided that Fort Worth needed a luxury florist, as well, and opened Sage Fine Flowers. Team Sage has had the opportunity to work with hundreds of couples over the past ten years! We love seeing our clients’ dreams become reality!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Life is filled with exciting ups and downs, isn’t it?!?! I would say that the entrepreneurial path is not for the faint of heart! Sage and I have grown up together in many ways. I have learned so much from working at first as a solopreneur, to having one employee, to surviving through a pandemic shutdown, to now running a corporation. I am so grateful that none of the learning opportunities have gone to waste! No matter what challenges we have faced, the company and I seem to come back stronger!

One of the biggest struggles of a new business owner is knowing that you don’t know everything yet. That can make one feel insecure and overwhelmed. One particular fear of mine when first going solo, was large installations. It is one thing to have a fully-staffed company when you arrive at a venue, and another to be alone, or have a single contractor with you. Who is going to get on the 14 foot ladder?!? How long is it going to take me to hang greenery on a 1,000sq foot ceiling?! It is quite normal to be nervous when doing something you have not done before. Through trial and error, I’m pleased to say that Sage is now considered one of the best floral studios for complex installations.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Sage Fine Flowers is an artistic floral studio, specializing in luxury weddings and events. Since 2014, Sage has helped hundreds of couples express their love through flowers. Team Sage is known for creativity, exceptional, organic design, and complex installations. Tisa is absolutely obsessive over making each wedding a uniquely beautiful statement. She often goes out into the woods to cut the exact piece of special greenery to make an arrangement pop, and personally chooses every bloom for every wedding. Every person on staff at Sage is an artist at what they do.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I love to master different subjects, particularly those that require mental, physical, as well as artistic effort. I get bored easily, so need to be thinking, moving, creating almost constantly. Some of my favorite pursuits have been horse training, traveling, studying philosophy, metaphysics and religion, as well as weightlifting, yoga and meditation. Currently, I’m trying to take over the world of Pickleball. If I lived closer to a beach, I would go snorkeling every day. If I lived in the mountains, I’d be a ski bum.
