Hidden Gems: Meet Joseph Robertson of Sappy’s Sports Cards

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph Robertson

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I first got into sports card collecting as a kid living in Korea in the late 1980s, focusing on baseball and basketball cards. The 1989 Upper Deck Ken Griffey Jr. rookie card was the ultimate chase when I started. I collected until 1994 before stepping away from the hobby. In 2009, a YouTube video reignited my passion—I saw someone opening a Topps Five Star Football box for $500, which immediately caught my interest. That moment inspired me to reenter the hobby, eventually turning my passion into a business. Over time, I grew that business into what it is today, with four card shops across the DFW area.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Overall, it has been relatively steady, though we has experienced its share of fluctuations. Card values tend to follow economic trends, with highs and lows over time. The industry saw a significant surge in prices during 2020 and 2021, followed by a correction. As with any collectible market, cycles of growth and decline are expected to continue.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Sappy’s Sports Cards in Carrollton serves as our primary location for all grading services. We provide customers with the opportunity to have their cards professionally graded by PSA, Beckett, and SGC, enhancing both their value and investment potential. In addition to grading, we offer a wide selection of singles, sealed products—including boxes and packs—and essential card supplies. Our diverse inventory spans both sports cards and trading card games (TCG), such as Pokémon and Magic: The Gathering. Additionally, I have ownership in other stores, including Beast Sports Cards in Plano, Triple Cards in North Dallas, and Waxxed in Deep Ellum.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Building genuine relationships with my customers is the cornerstone of my success. Connecting with them on a personal level makes all the difference, fostering trust and loyalty. By prioritizing strong customer relationships, I create an environment where customers feel valued, leading to repeat business and long-term success.
