Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Colter.
Hi Michael, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
MAGIC was born out of faith, action, and a deep desire to help young men see beyond their circumstances. As a husband, father of four, and an engineer by training—with degrees from the University of North Texas and Southern Methodist University—I’ve had the privilege of traveling the world through my career. But it was during a season working with a tutoring program in California that I saw something deeper: young men needed more than academic help. They needed guidance, mentorship, and a space to talk about life.
In 2012, the vision for MAGIC began stirring in my heart. By 2014, with the encouragement of my wife, I officially launched it as a nonprofit organization dedicated to equipping young men with exposure, opportunity, and direction. Rooted in my Christian faith and driven by a commitment to serve, MAGIC exists to help young men take ownership of their futures.
Over the past two years, we’ve hosted Mentors & Matchups—basketball-based mentorship sessions that use the court as a classroom for life. Our mission is simple: to show young men they can become more than they ever thought possible.
Throughout my journey, I’ve been blessed by mentors—from my father, to coaches, to mentors—and MAGIC is my way of paying that forward. This is more than a program. It’s a movement to inspire the next generation of leaders.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey hasn’t been easy—but it’s been worth every step. When you see the spark in a young man’s eyes as he realizes his potential, you can’t help but want to do more. That’s what drives us. But the reality is, doing more isn’t always simple.
Many of the families we serve are already stretched thin, juggling multiple responsibilities just to keep things afloat. That’s why we’re committed to keeping our programs free or as affordable as possible—so cost is never a barrier to access.
We’ve been blessed with generous support from a few companies, and every dollar has helped us make a real difference. But the need is growing. We know we could go even deeper—reach more kids, offer more opportunities, and expand our impact—if we had greater financial backing.
This work matters. These boys matter. And with more support, we can continue transforming lives—one young man at a time.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
What should you know about MAGIC?
MAGIC is more than a program—it’s a movement. We’re dedicated to empowering young boys to grow into confident, capable leaders by giving them the tools, exposure, and mentorship they often don’t receive elsewhere. Our mission is rooted in the belief that when kids are given the opportunity to imagine the impossible, they can achieve the extraordinary.
What do we specialize in?
We specialize in mentorship that goes beyond academics. From college readiness and career exploration to personal development and athletics, MAGIC creates well-rounded, life-changing experiences for our students. Whether it’s taking them on college tours, introducing them to professionals in various industries, or mentoring them on the basketball court, we provide consistent support that meets boys where they are and helps them grow.
What are we known for?
We’re known for making a deep, lasting impact. People see the spark in our students—the confidence, the curiosity, the sense of direction—and they know something powerful is happening. Through programs like Mentors & Matchups, we’ve used basketball as a bridge to build trust and teach life lessons, creating a safe space where boys feel seen, heard, and empowered.
What sets MAGIC apart?
What makes us different is our heart. Our commitment to keeping programs free or low-cost reflects our understanding of the real-life challenges many families face. We don’t just mentor—we walk alongside these boys, offering exposure to opportunities they may never encounter at home or school. We’re not just preparing them for college or careers; we’re preparing them for life.
What are we most proud of, brand-wise?
We’re proud to be a brand that represents transformation. Every student who steps into MAGIC becomes part of a bigger story—one where possibility replaces limitation, and leadership replaces fear. The MAGIC brand stands for hope, mentorship, and growth.
What do we want readers to know about our offerings?
If you’re looking to support an organization that’s truly changing lives, MAGIC is it. We offer academic support, college and career readiness, athletic mentorship, and real-world exposure—all designed to unlock the full potential in every young man we reach. With greater support, we can do even more—and we invite you to be part of that journey.
What’s next?
The future of MAGIC is bold, bright, and full of momentum.
This summer, we’re taking a group of our students on an exclusive tour of the Microsoft facility—an incredible opportunity that will open their eyes to what’s possible in the world of tech and innovation. Experiences like this are just the beginning.
We’re also expanding our tutoring program to better support our students academically. By integrating technology and innovative tools, we aim to provide personalized, accessible learning support that meets kids right where they are—and helps them get where they want to be.
But our biggest and most ambitious goal is building The MAGIC Center—a state-of-the-art, multi-purpose facility designed not just for our boys, but for the entire community. This will be more than a building. It will be a home for growth, mentorship, and possibility.
The MAGIC Center will serve as a hub for academic support, life skills training, mentorship, athletics, and community events. Students will come here to build confidence, unlock their potential, and prepare for life beyond the classroom. But it’s also a space where the entire community can thrive—whether that means working out, hosting business meetings, or simply gathering to connect and grow together.
