Today we’d like to introduce you to Paula Nelms.
Hi Paula, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I work in the fields of nutrition and functional medicine. My journey into health and wellness began about seven years ago when I underwent a total diet and lifestyle change. I used to eat a poor diet, I was overweight, and chronic disease seemed imminent. I was tired of living this way, so I started consuming more whole, real foods, eliminated added sugar, and lost 40 pounds within six months. This ignited a passion within me to return to graduate school and study nutrition as thoroughly as possible, so I could help others, because let’s face it – nutrition information in the US can be very, very confusing.
I earned a Master of Science in Nutrition and Functional Medicine, and I am a Certified Nutrition Specialist (CNS). My board certification allows me to practice Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT). About 80% of my work revolves around helping my clients improve various chronic diseases, and I also assist people with weight loss, weight gain, and weight maintenance. One of the greatest joys in my life is when I hear from clients that they are feeling better, their symptoms are improving, and they have adopted new healthy habits that not only lengthen their lifespan but also enhance their health span… those years they spend near the end of their lives feeling healthy and energetic.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I have held various jobs throughout my life, and they ultimately felt difficult because they didn’t resonate with me. Once I discovered my passion for health and wellness, everything truly fell into place. It is powerful when you find your calling. However, the journey hasn’t always been smooth. It’s terrifying to venture out on your own and start a new business! Doubts can often chip away at your confidence. But I stay close to nutrition science as I make recommendations, and witnessing the positive outcomes and transformed lives is truly wonderful.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Nelms Nutrition?
I opened my private practice eighteen months ago, and I have worked for a company that provides alternative treatments for mood disorders for three years.
I prioritize food first because it is one of the most powerful tools we have for influencing our physical and mental health. I provide education and counseling on nutrition, along with functional medicine solutions for chronic diseases, optimal health, and longevity. Functional medicine aims to identify the root cause of disease, and more often than not, things in the diet may be the culprit. Additionally, I offer guidance on meal planning and preparation, cooking lessons, and nutrition classes for both kids and adults, as well as workshops and more. If there is a need for anything related to nutrition or health, I find a way to make it happen.
I am a generalist with a broad range of expertise. I assist in disease prevention and the management of various medical conditions, including gastrointestinal disorders, cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, food allergies and sensitivities, autoimmune diseases, thyroid and kidney conditions, chronic fatigue, cognitive decline, hormone balance, and chronic inflammation, among others. I order and interpret all types of basic and functional lab work and possess extensive training in supplementation.
Two things truly set me apart and are integral to my “brand.” First, having personally navigated and maintained significant dietary and lifestyle changes greatly benefits my clients. I understand the struggles and challenges they face, and I recognize how tough it can be to stay focused at times. Second, most clients I meet who have chronic diseases are aware of their diagnosis, but they often know little about what it signifies or what is happening. I take the time to educate them on what is going on in their bodies and how my recommendations may help.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
People can reach out to me by phone (214-771-6143), email ([email protected]), or through my website (nelmsnutrition.com) to discuss potential collaboration and working together. I would be delighted.
