Today we’d like to introduce you to Taniyah (DJ Lucky T) Harris.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Music has always been a big part of me. I grew up listening to music alot. In highschool, I made playlists on apple music for everyone and I just always felt in tune with music. In fact, at one point my dream was to be an audio engineer. After the pandemic in 2020, I was at a point in my life where I wanted to try something new. Fast forward in 2022, I looked into Djing and I already had a laptop because I’m a college student, so my next step was to get a controller. Within the span of a few days after receiving my controller, I networked with other djs at the time which helped me to get my first few crates of music. Every day for almost 6 months straight, I practiced until I couldn’t anymore and a little later I landed my first Dj gig which was at my University, The University of Texas at Arlington. Ever since then, I have been djing all over Dallas, building my portfolio and friendships with other Djs. I’m so grateful to be able to dj in the places I’ve been at.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road for me. As a female Dj, I have had a lot of people doubt me. I’ve also had people to not really believe in me or want to give me a chance because I haven’t been djing for long. I’ve also struggled with being patient in this industry. However, I’m grateful for all the obstacles I’ve experienced because they’ve taught me to lean on myself and keep going.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m an Open Format DJ. Meaning there’s no limits to what kind of crowd I can play for. I believe I specialize in picking the right songs for the right moments. I’m known for playing the songs you forgot about, the songs you used to listen to on the school bus in high school in the morning. I live for the nostalgic moments during my sets. I think that’s what sets me apart from other DJs because I can play the new stuff, don’t get me wrong, but to be comfortable enough to take a chance and play something from 2016 and still have the crowd jumping, is not something that most Djs do. I’m most proud of my growth so far and coming out of my comfort zone.

What does success mean to you?
I define success as the impact you make on others. If I’m not making an impact, I don’t call it success. To relate that to Djing, every set I strive to impact someone in the crowd, whether it’s brightening your mood with my set because you had a bad day or whether it’s trading knowledge with another dj about equipment or software. That’s impact to me. There’s other ways to define success, but I truly don’t think I’m successful until I have made some type of impact on others.
