Today we’d like to introduce you to Madi Hays.
Hi Madi, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started with being super into makeup when I was a teenager. I had such a passion for connecting with others and being creative, which lead to me becoming a makeup artist through college. I have a degree in communications and always planned to use it in the beauty industry. One day I realized that no one working with beauty on the corporate side really understood the skin and how it worked so I decided “okay well what if I just went to esthetics school?” I decided if I was working in beauty corporately, especially in skincare where most of my passion had started to gravitate, I would have the education to back it up. I started taking clients while getting my license to become and esthetician and the rest was history. I LOVED connecting with people for the treatments and getting them results. I was truly enjoying my job and it was so fulfilling. I switched over to working for med spas and being an esthetician full time after completing esthetics school. Overtime I grew a love for treating clients with acne. I treat all clients with every skin type and concern, but acne prone clients have a special place in my heart. I started pouring myself into learning as much education as I could so I could give it all to my clients. I realized one day that working in other med spas I wasn’t getting the experience I wanted for my clients. Most spas are either super relaxing with treatments that don’t do much, or it’s super sterile and feels like a doctor’s office. I felt left with the question of why couldn’t I do both? In 2024 I opened Skin Magic Aesthetics to make the space I was craving, both for my clients and for myself for a working environment. Skin Magic Aesthetics is where you can get corrective treatments but also feel super cozy and comfortable. Regardless of if you are coming in for a relaxing facial or an acne treatment, you’re going to love your service and the space you’re in.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’m the kind of person that is convinced I can do anything if I put my mind to it. I never planned on becoming a solo esthetician and opening my own space. When I realized that working for other spas there would always be something missing for me, I knew I had to pull the trigger on making my own space. It was never about being my own boss for me, it was always about making sure I was offering my clients my 100% best and I knew I couldn’t do that if I wasn’t controlling all of the variables myself. It was NOT easy! I essentially saved up some money and one day said “okay it’s time to do this” and never looked back. I was very busy at a much faster rate than most estheticians are when they first open, but I had a super loyal clientele that would follow me anywhere. It was great to know I had to stability and consistent bookings, but I had no idea what I was doing! I had no idea how to do taxes or balance books or figure out any of the back end business stuff that should be going on. It was a little bumpy especially because at the same time I was opening my own business, I was planning a wedding (very insane of me to think I should be doing all of these things haha). I am used to wearing many hats but I had to learn that it is okay to outsource and let others help you! You don’t always have to do everything yourself.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I do corrective skincare treatments that range from a variety of services like chemical peels, acne treatments, dermaplaning, custom facials, and cryo facials (glacial skin).
I specialize and am known for treating acne. I’m very proud of my work with acne, but acne is often overlooked in the esthetics industry. It’s a stigma with many that think if you have acne you’re “dirty” or not taking care of yourself. Usually acne has a root cause that it is stemming from, and I pride myself on making sure we take a 360 degree approach to clearing it. We talk about diet, lifestyle, skincare, all of it. Our goal is find the root cause so that we can get you clear and keep you clear.
The number one professional acne line is Face Reality Skincare – which has fantastic formulas that I use on hand for clearing clients. I do extra certifications and trainings regularly with them and love that I am able to give my clients the best of the best when it comes to skincare that will actually work. Face Reality actually runs something called Acne Expert of the year, where estheticians all over the country can apply to show they have a deep understanding of acne and know how to clear clients. I actually am #7 for this out of everyone who applied! I’m super proud that my work and results were recognized by highly trained professionals and experts in the field.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Oh I was (and still am) a yapper. I can talk and talk and I love connecting with others. I was always shocked when I heard other estheticians have such quiet appointments with their clients, meanwhile mine are laughing and giggling with me for their whole service.
I’ve always been very empathetic. I’ve always been very comfortable listening to others and really feel where they are coming from.
I was super bubbly and still am! I’ve always been this way. I really couldn’t meet a stranger if I tried. I truly think if you can spread kindness in this world, there’s no reason not to.
I’ve always been a big learner as well. Top of my class both in high school, college, and esthetics school. I HATE for someone to ask me a question and not already know the answer. I’m a little bookworm in that way. I love reading books and learning and I’ve always been like this.
