Hidden Gems: Meet Padmaja Ankus of Ishika Boutique USA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Padmaja Ankus.

Hi Padmaja, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey began back in India, where I balanced a full-time tech job with a small side hustle—running a boutique out of my living room. Those two years were exhausting but incredibly fulfilling. It was incredibly rewarding to see my fabric and jewelry make people feel radiant and truly themselves. That passion stayed with me even after I moved to the U.S. and completed my M.S. in Information Systems at the University of North Texas. After graduation, I worked at Home Depot, saving every bit I could to fund my business.

Six months ago, I officially launched Ishika Boutique USA—it’s a one-woman brand focused on affordable, gold-plated jewelry that blends South Asian craftsmanship with a modern, minimalist American aesthetic. My days are packed—from social media, product shoots, editing, marketing, logistics, vendor collaborations and late-night Zoom calls with offshore manufacturers. I sell both online through Instagram and at pop-up expos and I’m proud to say my pieces now live in jewelry boxes across more than 10 states in the US.

Every sale gets reinvested—into better gold plating, sustainable packaging and an upcoming product line. Next steps? Launching my e-commerce site and hiring my first part-time team member, so I can focus more on design and scaling. Every photo a customer sends wearing my products is a reminder that late nights are worth it—and that a small idea can grow into something beautiful.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Definitely not a smooth road—but every bump has taught me something valuable. Launching Ishika Boutique USA on my own means wearing multiple hats every day. I handle everything myself—design, product shoots, editing, marketing, shipping, customer service, you name it. From learning the ins and outs of logistics and marketing to juggling international time zones for late-night Zoom calls with manufacturers, the pace can be overwhelming.

Some days feel like a constant uphill climb, like navigating supply chain delays, figuring out packaging on a tight budget or doing pop-up events with zero idea how many people would show up. But through all of it, I’ve learned to problem-solve on the fly, stay scrappy and stay focused on why I started: to bring beautiful, culturally rooted, accessible jewelry to people who appreciate both tradition and design. The challenges have been real—but so has the growth.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Ishika Boutique USA is a labor of love—brand born from a deep appreciation for South Asian craftsmanship and a desire to create beautiful, accessible jewelry that blends tradition with modern minimalism. The brand specializes in affordable, gold-plated pieces that feel timeless yet fresh, drawing inspiration from both my Indian roots and contemporary American design.

What sets Ishika Boutique apart is the intention behind every piece. They’re thoughtfully curated, handcrafted designs that celebrate culture in a subtle, wearable way. I work closely with artisans and manufacturers to ensure quality and authenticity, while also focusing on clean, minimal styles that resonate with a broader audience.

I’m most proud of the connection I’ve built with my customers. Every order is packed by hand and there’s a personal touch in everything I do—from custom styling to sustainable packaging choices. My goal is for each person who wears an Ishika piece to feel seen, celebrated and stylish.

Whether it’s someone discovering their first pair of earrings or a loyal customer waiting for the next drop of bracelets, Ishika Boutique is more than jewelry—it’s a story of identity, creativity and connection. I want readers to know that when they support my brand, they’re not just buying a product—they’re supporting a dream and a whole lot of heart.

How do you think about happiness?
What truly makes me happy is hearing from my customers—when they message me to say how much they love their order or send photos wearing a piece they chose for a special occasion. It means everything.

There’s a unique joy in knowing something I created with care and intention became a small part of someone’s celebration or everyday routine. Whether it’s a bride picking out earrings for her big day or someone gifting a piece to their best friend, those moments of connection are what keep me going.

It’s not just about selling jewelry—it’s about creating something meaningful that people feel good wearing. Every kind message, every happy customer, reminds me that all the hard work, late nights and hustle are worth it.
