Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily McCaffrey.
Hi Emily, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Ever since I was a little girl, I enjoyed writing. I would write short stories for my parents in elementary school. I wrote personal narratives, poems, and short stories in high school (I even won some awards – my claim to fame). I have always had a love for writing & creativity through words. Writing, storytelling, and poetry have always been outlets for me to express myself in a creative way.
In 2020, when the world shut down, I took to the internet to write on a different blog than this one, another blog named Grace Abounds to encourage others in a time where there was so much uncertainty and fear. I stopped writing in college out of a lack of time, not desire. Recently, the desire has been stirred more as I have been seeking to find an outlet to be creative as a young adult, newly married, trying to navigate post-grad… how hard could that be?
Well, as I continued to crave creativity, I began to dream about writing for a personal blog again, and so began What’s Em Style – a lifestyle blog for the everyday girl who loves style, design, & homemaking. While developing my blog, I was also posting more consistently on TikTok & Instagram. I realized that I loved to curate media in a variety of ways to be appealing to the eye and pleasing to the viewer. These platforms have begun to grow, and it has been such a joy to navigate this dream becoming a reality!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Sometimes I believe that our greatest obstacle is ourselves… at least that is true of myself. I am often my harshest critic, but I am grateful for the people who I have in my corner who have encouraged me to keep going. Every time I want to throw away the dream of writing more consistently and building a community of women who feel inspired, I am thankful I have a support system to help me push through the challenges.
Exterior challenges I have faced already is simply the balance of my time. I feel like when you love something so much you want to give every minute that you have to it, but there are always a million other things fighting for your attention. I am having to navigate how to prioritize the people I love and create space to create knowing it is what I love!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
In my professional career, I work as an administrative assistant for a large church in Dallas. I would say that I specialize in the day to day operations and special events. I am known for my grit, determination, and joy in my workplace. I bring a joyful presence to my office, while still getting my work done! I get to serve my church through my administrative and operational gifts so all things on the front lines go smoothly.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I guess it depends on how you define “risks.” i feel like anytime you put yourself out there to the internet, It is a risk in a way because you don’t know how people will respond. When it comes to risks as leaps of faith in my life, I am slow and methodical in how I think about it. I would weigh the potential pitfalls or gains. If I feel like it would be worth it in the long run and I can see the future benefit of whatever risk I’d be taking, then I am more inclined to take it. Sometimes, it just comes down to trusting the Lord and taking the risk believing he has my best in mind.
