Life & Work with Felix Ndugwa of Pantego Tx

Today we’d like to introduce you to Felix Ndugwa.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
The Spark
My journey into the world of coffee, and ultimately the creation of Karibu Coffee Cafe, began with a long-cherished dream of owning a food-based business. While that passion simmered, my casual interest in coffee quickly blossomed into a profound, albeit expensive, hobby. The true turning point came when I delved into roasting my own beans. It was then I realized the incredible breadth of taste and adventure that could be unlocked from a single coffee bean, a revelation that propelled me to transform this cherished passion into a business.

The Challenges
The path to establishing Karibu Coffee Cafe has been one of continuous evolution, marked by various hurdles. Initially, a significant challenge was overcoming the “imposter syndrome” – the feeling of vulnerability stepping into the immense and established coffee industry. This was quickly followed by the practical complexities of funding the venture. Beyond securing capital, the relentless and persistent learning curve of mastering every aspect of the coffee business proved demanding. Subsequent challenges have included finding the perfect location and, crucially, scaling our operations while meticulously maintaining quality and control across every single aspect of the business.

The Vision and Mission
The name “Karibu” itself, meaning “welcome” in Swahili (a widely spoken language in East Africa), perfectly encapsulates the core of my vision. I’ve always wanted to create more than just a coffee shop; I sought to build a place that is genuinely inviting, deeply relaxing, inherently comfortable, and above all, truly welcoming to everyone who walks through our doors. Our philosophy on coffee is straightforward: it should be an enjoyable experience across the board – delivering exceptional taste, offering undeniable value for money, and always, an element of adventure in every cup.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
First and foremost, I am most proud of the incredible support and encouragement we’ve received since we started, both from our customers and well-wishers, Secondly, we are deeply grateful for God’s faithfulness and grace that has guided us every step of the way.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
The most important quality for Karibu Coffee Cafe’s success, and for me, is our ability to stick with it through tough times, along with truly making everyone feel welcome and enjoy their coffee.

My journey has shown me how much grit and determination we need. We’ve faced many bumps along the road – from feeling unsure when starting out, to finding money, getting the right spot, and growing the business while keeping things just right. Pushing through these challenges has been key.

But it’s more than just being tough. My main goal for Karibu has always been what its name means: “welcome.” It’s about making sure every person who walks in feels at home, relaxed, and happy. This focus on making people feel good, combined with our strong will to overcome problems, is what makes Karibu Coffee Cafe a success.
