Check Out John Bowers III’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Bowers III.

Hi John, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Rowlett has always been home. My parents instilled in me the values of service, discipline, and community from an early age. Growing up, I saw firsthand what it meant to show up for others, whether through my parents’ leadership or simply lending a hand to neighbors after a storm; that mindset stuck with me.

When I was in high school, a tornado devastated parts of Rowlett. I remember handing out water and helping families clear debris because I knew it was the right thing to do. That moment shaped how I view leadership: it’s not about titles, it’s always about showing up for your community.

I went on to attend Morehouse College, where I was proud to serve as the 88th Student Body President. Morehouse further developed my passion for service and leadership, and I eventually returned home to earn an MBA in Strategy from Southern Methodist University’s Cox School of Business, sharpening the problem-solving and policy acumen I now bring back to the community that raised me.

Professionally, I work in the financial services industry, leading global workforce development initiatives and supporting veterans and military spouses. That work has deepened my understanding of systems, accountability, and how to empower people to reach their potential.

This year, I ran for Rowlett City Council because I saw the need for a new kind of leadership, one that listens, includes, and builds. We ran a community-powered campaign focused on infrastructure, transparency, and smart growth. The voters responded to our message, and we won. I’m now honored to serve as Councilmember for Place 6, and I bring all of these experiences with me into this role every day.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, but the bumps along the way have taught me something new, and this challenge has shaped me into the leader I am today.

Running for office as a young, first-time candidate, especially in a place you’ve grown up in, comes with a unique set of struggles. Navigating a local race within a tight-knit community without overshadowing people’s needs wasn’t easy. There were moments when I felt defeated—but so many people were right there to lift me back up.

Of course, there were the personal struggles that many candidates had to overcome: balancing a full-time career, community work, and campaigning, while trying to stay centered and grounded.

But through all of that, I stayed focused on the “why” behind this work: to serve, to lead with integrity, and to make sure every person in this city knows they matter.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My role focuses on developing systems that create opportunities, particularly for veterans, military spouses, and often forgotten talent. I’ve led mentorship programs, supported leadership development pipelines, and worked across departments to help build a forward-thinking workplace.

What I’m most proud of, though, is that whether it’s in my day job or in public service, my work is always rooted in the same goal: investing in people and helping them reach their full potential. As a Councilman, I bring that same approach to city government. I specialize in listening before acting, asking the tough questions, and following through.

What sets me apart is that I lead with the community in mind first. I strive to be accessible to anyone who wants to speak with me. I’m proud to be someone who can sit at the table with people from all walks of life and help them with any issue, big or small. That’s the kind of leader I strive to be—accessible, accountable, and always people-first.

What’s next?
Right now, my focus is on serving Rowlett to the best of my ability and ensuring I deliver on the promises I made to this community. I’m looking forward to continuing the work we’ve started, from strengthening infrastructure, supporting local families, and creating spaces where people feel seen and heard.

My plan for the future is to continue showing up, learning, and creating positive change wherever I can.
