Hidden Gems: Meet David Jarquin of Independence Chiropractic

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Jarquin.

Hi David, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
When I first began my journey I had never been to a chiropractor and I was not interested in chiropractic. In fact, I was studying biomedical engineering in order to do research in regenerative medicine. While playing soccer in college I tore my MCL during a match. I initially began down the traditional medical route and saw an orthopedist who spent all of 2 minutes with me and told me I would need surgery which would sideline me for 6 months and prevent me from finishing my college soccer career. A teammate of mine suggested I go see his chiropractor for a second opinion. His chiropractor was able to treat my knee in 3 months, without surgery, and I was able to continue playing soccer, and still do to this day. My knee has not bothered me since. After that I began looking more into chiropractic and ended up going to Parker University to become a chiropractor in order to give people the option of treating their injuries with non invasive treatments and give them the same hope I was given.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, it has not been a smooth road. Chiropractic is often “looked down upon” by traditional medicine. There is always a stigma that we are not “real doctors”. If you compare the basic curriculums of medical doctors and doctors of chiropractic we take just as many hours as them. We also have clinical rotations and have extensive training. While I did not become a chiropractor so that people call me “doctor” or to give medical advice often times medical doctors will tell my patients that surgery is a better option than holistic care. Another challenge I have faced is opening up my own office. The first few months were rough trying to get patients in the door especially because many people have not tried chiropractic before and and weary because of stories that they have heard that are often times not true. Thankfully our office has a strong patient base that is very loyal.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Independence Chiropractic?
When I opened my office I wanted to expand the reach of chiropractic and I wanted people that have been afraid to try chiropractic to have a place where they feel comfortable and where they are properly educated before being adjusted. We have many patients that have have be through chiropractic before but I wanted to also lower the barrier of entry for those who haven’t. The way we accomplish that is by practicing “evidence based chiropractic” while staying true to the philosophy of chiropractic. All of our patients begin with a through exam and x-rays (with the exception of young children and women who are pregnant). I then compile a treatment plan to address structural deficiencies in order to improve overall wellness and optimize health. I then sit with the patient and review their x-rays and treatment plan so they are educated on what is causing their symptoms and how we can correct the issue. By being so through and taking our time at the beginning we are able to treat our patients in an efficient manor. Our patients love that they can “get in and out” on their way home from work or on the way to drop of their kids at school. Our appointments are usually between 5 and 10 minutes and patients are not scheduled at particular times which keeps our appointments flexible. I am most proud that we have been able to spread the healing power of chiropractic to thousands of families. I want people to know that our mission is to serve as many people as we are capable of. We welcome everyone to come give chiropractic a try and to at least be informed of the root cause of their aches and pains rather than just try to treat a symptom.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love that our city is growing but still has a “small town feel”. The people here are extremely kind and helpful. We had a tornado last year and it seems like the entire city banded together to go help those in need.

As much as I like that the city is growing the construction has been a real pain, especially for our office. We are located right off of a major road and it is constantly closed due to construction and it make is very difficult for our patients to reach us.
