Meet Andrea Darwin of DFW Metroplex

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrea Darwin.

Andrea, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My design journey wasn’t a career pivot. It was a homecoming. I come from a long lineage of talented artisans and creatives on both sides of my family, where the love for designing beautiful spaces was simply a way of life. My mom and grandmother, whom I affectionately call “the masters,” were my first and most influential teachers. I was the kid you’d find happily immersed in colorful bolts of fine fabrics, studying kaleidoscopic paint fan decks, and getting lost in colossal wallpaper books! I was always along for the ride, assisting my mom and grandmother with their various interior, exterior, and fiber artistry projects from the time I was able to walk and talk!

These formative experiences laid the foundation for what would later become Andrea Darwin Design. In my youth, I was either creating outdoor gardens with my exceptional grandmother, delving into the fascinating antiques my grandparents had collected from around the world during the post-World War II reconstruction efforts, or enhancing a multitude of interior spaces with my talented fiber artist mom.

After earning my graduate degree at Northwestern University and certification in project management, I took the entrepreneurial leap into founding my design firm. What sets Andrea Darwin Design apart is my unique combination of design offerings and project management skills.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Absolutely not, and I wouldn’t expect it to be! Running a business is like raising kids; it truly takes a village of support. I’ve always been an extremely driven and tenacious person, which is essential as a business owner.

One of the biggest challenges has been building and maintaining a trusted network of skilled craftsmen and talented artisans. Early on, I made the mistake of diving into big projects with unproven partners, which taught me the hard way that vetting potential collaborators is crucial for delivering the quality my clients need and deserve.

I’ve had to learn to be agile when things shift. Vendors change focus, contractors move on, life happens. This year alone, I’ve had to rethink, pivot, and find solutions more than once. Small business ownership requires staying prepared for change and remaining focused on solutions instead of setbacks.

Every challenge I’ve encountered has made me stronger and more committed to the relationships that define my work. It has taught me the importance of establishing sound partnerships and staying true to my values. I’m committed to delivering the highest standards in every aspect of my work, and these lessons have not only made me a better designer but also a more reliable and trustworthy partner for my clients. You can trust that when you work with me, you’re getting quality and a commitment to your vision.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I provide comprehensive, full-spectrum commercial and residential design services and project management from start to finish. My portfolio includes everything from renovations/construction, furniture and textile sourcing, upholstery, refinishing, wallpaper, staging/styling, window fashions, as well as creative event planning, and seasonal decor projects. I handle every aspect of the projects I undertake, from the initial concept to completion, ensuring that every detail is handled with the utmost care and attention.

At the heart of my approach is what I call ‘storied design.’ This unique philosophy means creating spaces that tell people’s stories and reflect who they are, where they’ve been, and what they value. The story is the heart and soul of design, going beyond aesthetics and function. This approach sets me apart from other designers, as I believe in creating spaces that are not just visually appealing, but also deeply personal and meaningful.

What does success mean to you?
Success, for me, isn’t measured by the size of my business or the number of projects I undertake. Success is measured by the depth of relationships I build and the impact I have on my clients’ lives.

When I wake up each morning excited to do the work I love, that’s success. When a client calls me years after a project because they trust me with their next vision, that’s success. When I help preserve or properly showcase a family heirloom or create a comforting space where someone feels truly at home, that’s success.
I often say that my clients aren’t projects. They are people who deserve the best experiences and outcomes. Success means being able to provide that peace of mind to be their one-stop design shop where every detail is handled with care.

I’m intentionally not trying to be like every other designer or design firm. I offer a unique experience with personalized spaces, comprehensive services, and that storied design approach for clients who value peace of mind and creativity. I want to grow, but not so big that I lose the personal touch and attention to detail that set my work apart. Meaningful growth, one relationship at a time, is how I measure success. When guests walk into a space I’ve designed and leave feeling like they know my client better, when an event I’ve planned becomes an unforgettable experience that brings people closer together, when someone’s house truly becomes their home through thoughtful design, that’s when I know I’ve succeeded.

Success is also about honoring the legacy of “the masters” who taught me that meaningful, quality work and nurturing relationships with those around you are what truly matter. I’m grateful every day that I get to carry forward their influence while creating something uniquely my own. Their influence is at the heart of everything I do, and I hope it helps you understand the depth of my commitment to quality and meaningful design!
