Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Palacios.
Michelle, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Since I was in third grade, I knew I wanted to be a therapist in private practice. I had an aunt that did it and I loved the idea of being able to help people feel better as job. I was already helping my friends with their problems. I was a good listener and people would often open up to me about the things they were struggling with. By the time I was in 7th grade I was volunteering in the school counselor’s office. I had a great school counselor and I was amazed at how kids would walk into her office sad and crying and walk out smiling. When I was in 8th grade, she passed away from cancer. I had the opportunity to speak at a memorial event they had for her and was moved by the impact she had on so many lives. She really made a difference in so many lives and I knew I wanted to make a positive and powerful impact on the world like she did.
Seventeen years later and lots of hard work, I opened my private practice and began seeing clients. It was every bit as incredible as I dreamed it to be. I feel so honored and privileged to do the work that I do and be someone that my clients trusted to bare the souls and deepest pains in order to heal.
After working in private practice for about 6 years, I started to notice a pattern. I was seeing more and more entrepreneurs or people that wanted to be entrepreneurs and were not going for it and were therefore miserable in their jobs. I learned that 49% of entrepreneurs struggle with mental illness like depression, anxiety, ADHD, OCD, etc. I wasn’t surprised. My great parents, grandfather, father, my siblings and myself are all entrepreneurs and I have seen first-hand the toll that it can take on you emotionally. Being an entrepreneur myself, I really understood how opening your own business will trigger all of your insecurities and wounds that you have not healed and force you to deal with them. Entrepreneurs grapple with fear all the time. They are afraid to fail, to be rejected to not make enough money, to be seen to not be good enough and so on and so on. If you aren’t careful those fears will hold you back from realizing your dream of the freedom of having a successful business. This was tragic to me, because I LOVE my job. I LOVE getting to pursue my greatest passions. The sheer joy and fulfillment I get from what I do is something that I want everyone to experience and yet, many don’t. They succumb to fear, self-doubt and stress.
So, in 2017, I decided to add coaching to my practice to better help people pursue their biggest dreams like owning their own business and do so while being able to manage the fear and the stress so that it doesn’t get the best of them.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Has it been a smooth road? Heck no! It is one of the most challenging things I have pursued. While I love what I do and the longer I do it, the easier it gets, there have been scary times. I am not immune to the emotional roller coaster of owning your own business. In all of the years of education I have gotten they taught me skills to be a great therapist, but never taught me anything about owning my own business.
I have been lucky to be surrounded by incredible support. When I first started out, I went to my doctor and tried to get medicated for anxiety. She asked what was going on and when I told her I was opening up my own practice, she smiled a knowing smile, the kind all entrepreneurs get when they are more seasoned talking to a new entrepreneur and told me I didn’t need medication, I needed clients. She has been sending me clients ever since.
There have been other times when I have wanted to give up and go back to working for the school district where I would have a steady income. Luckily, I have been fortunate enough to have people like my husband and father to remind me to believe in myself as they believe in me and to remind me why I do what I do and how I wouldn’t be happy if I gave up on myself.
So, no, it has not been easy, but now that I have been doing this for 7 years, I am starting to see the patterns and learning the nature of the beast that is owning your own business. I have been able to get a handle on my fears and insecurities and realize they are just old scary stories that aren’t true or my ego trying to protect me. I have been doing it long enough now to know there is an ebb and flow to the business and that I can be happier, more financially successful, have more free time and do more of what I love working for myself. Those scary times and struggles are fewer and far between now.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Life Revised – what should we know?
My company, Life Revised, PLLC, provides counseling, coaching and courses. These services empower people with tools they need to change their thoughts and behaviors so they can live the life of their dreams. I work with people that are stressed and overwhelmed. My clients are typically driven, go-getter, perfectionists that are very hard on themselves.
The thing I am most proud of that my company does is teach people to love themselves and that they are enough as they are. Their value and worth are independent of what they do, achieve or other people’s opinions of them. This frees them from fear and gives them the freedom they need to reach for their biggest dreams, pursue their greatest happiness and get their lives back.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
The quality or characteristic that is the most important for my success is my passion. I have a true passion for what I do. I care deeply about every one of my clients. I live, eat, sleep breathe what I do. I never tire of learning about new ways to help my clients or make them successful. I am fascinated by all of it. I have an insatiable curiosity to know everything about what makes people tic and what helps them to feel better I never tire from listening to and supporting my clients. Therefore, it never feels like work to me, it feels like a natural part of who I am.
