Life & Work with Shadan Kishi Price of Denton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shadan Kishi Price.

Hi Shadan, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
After receiving my bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts Studies, I followed that with another bachelor’s in Hospitality Management. After college, I ran/owned the first award winning vegetarian food truck in Denton, TX which I followed with a frozen food product in local grocery stores. In between all this I have taught cooking classes, worked as a kitchen manager at the first fully vegan college dining hall in the United States, and much more.

I have just published my first cookbook “Cookbook Club: Plant-Based Recipes for Entertaining.” It is available for preorder now and officially comes out on September 9th. You can find more info on my website at www.shadancooks.com or on social media @shadankp

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I wouldn’t necessary say that promoting anything plant-based in Texas has ever been easy but as the years go by there are larger pockets of people interested in plant- based food (be it as a lifestyle change or just an occasional recipe).

Finding a publisher for the book was difficult as well because in this day and age, to publish a cookbook, most publishers are looking for a huge social media following. I’ve spent the last 2 years building up my following and have learned a lot along the way about social media trends and video editing that I did not know before. It has been a fun challenge.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I have been in the food industry for the last 10+ years. Almost exactly two years ago I decided to finally write a cookbook which was something I had wanted to do for a long time. It took me some time to perfect the recipes and get everything put together but I am so excited to have finally written it and for it to be a real thing out there in the world.

I specialize in plant-based foods but I also love planning a party/event…especially if it has a theme! This new cookbook combines my favorite things (cooking and party planning) and gives tips/tricks for starting your own cookbook club as well as many mouth-watering recipes to make for your friends and family.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
My parents are very social (as most Iranians are) so I grew up around a lot of people. I didn’t appreciate it as much when I was younger, and especially when I was a teenager and just wanted to be with my own friends, but being around so many different kinds of people and socializing led the way for my interest in people and party planning.

I also didn’t realize it when I was a kid, but my parents had their own group of “found family” that they made once we moved to the states (mostly comprised of other people who had to leave their families) and I see now as an adult how important it is to have these people in your life. It’s nice to have a group of people to get together with or celebrate with. It’s why I’ve always loved meeting people and then introducing my friends to new friends that I think they would like as well. I love playing “friend matchmaker” and a cookbook club is a great way to do that!
