Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeff Dawson.
Jeff, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today? Expert Drywall USA has been serving the Dallas community since 2005 and was founded by Jeff Dawson with a single power tool, a 1995 Nissan Pickup, and a lot of ingenuity. A family operated drywall company, we specialize in residential and commercial drywall repair and drywall installation services. The company was built on large and small jobs, one project at a time, and Jeff now has over 35 contractors, 10 dedicated vehicles, over 400 power tools, and a satisfied customer list of over 3500 homes- and business owners. Jeff is a fully licensed carpenter himself and the firm provides education and training for all field staff. Over the years we have expanded our area of expertise in sheetrock, water damage repair, acoustic or popcorn removal and disposal, faux finishes, and historic and old home plaster repairs. For the past 12 months, we have also been looking into expanding to Austin, Houston, and San Antonio.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way? No, it absolutely wasn’t a smooth road, Especially, the first 3-4 years were extremely difficult to keep the company alive. When I founded the company, it was only me and my dad who did all the work. As we hired more staff, our expenses got out of control. So, keeping positive cash flow was the biggest struggle. Also, in order to provide quality drywall repair work, it takes a little more than just buying a couple of power tools, spackle, and sandpaper to fix a whole in a wall, In the very beginning, I had no idea how to run a business, and what licenses, insurance and permits were required. It all got a bit easier when my brother came on board who is a certified account and financial planner. At the end of the day, I realize that competition never sleeps. And in order to stay on top of things, you need to constantly learn. The industry is constantly changing and so is our customers’ demands.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Expert Drywall USA – what should we know? So, I am a licensed carpenter and I know everything there is about drywall, home renovation and construction. Expert Drywall USA first started out by providing general drywall repair, drywall installation and painting work. As we grew the company, we hired more staff, and we noticed that customers were asking for more services. For this reason, we now specialize in sheetrock, ceiling repair, water damage repair, acoustic or popcorn removal and disposal, faux finishes, and historic and old home plaster repairs. What sets us apart is that we are a family operated business and that we care about exceptional customer service. I believe, we are most proud of providing a very personal service and that we are slowly being recognized in the Dallas community.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role? There is only two people who deserve credit; my dad Alex who just turned 65. He was there to provide financial support when I first started the business in 2005. Then, my brother mark who taught me so much about business, accounting and finances. I firmly believe, if it wasn’t for these two, I would have never gotten this far.
