Hidden Gems: Meet Nancy of Ohana Warrior MMA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nancy.

Hi Nancy, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Our head coach Mona has been in the martial arts world for well over 2 decades. She started off under the tutelage of the world famous Saekson Janjira, where she had the opportunity to study and experience traditional Muay Thai from some of the world’s very best. As one of Saekson’s original students, she learned Muay Thai in all of its components: culture, technique, and love for the art. During those years she spent at Saeksons, Mona played a pivotal role in managing his gym and fighters, helping them build a system that works and a home for everyone there. She has a vivacious, life-loving personality filled with nothing but love and care for those that cross her path. Out of a desire to create a home, she took her experience, knowledge, and love and opened up Ohana Warrior MMA Gym. It took a lot of guts, especially as a woman in a man’s sport, but she did it! Over the last two decades, she has built a family of good-hearted, humble-minded people who speak softly, but train passionately. Guided by the principle of giving people a place to belong and always accepting and loving people for who they are, she spearheads the gym as head instructor, manager, and mother to all. Now we have a gym to call home in Richardson, Tx.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Yes, opening a gym in a man’s world was not the easiest from the beginning. However over time, we were recognized by our community for our dedication and love for our students as well as for the growth of the sports. Now that we are in 2025, female trainers are a norm and we welcome everyone from all walks of life to join us.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Ohana Warrior MMA?

We are very proud of the community and sense of family that we’ve built here.

We offer free trials of each of the group classes for both kids and adults. We also have dedicated coaches who are available for questions after class as well as private lessons if you’re looking for one on one lessons.

How do you think about luck?
As a small business focusing on 2 forms of martial arts, we are very thankful for our students for their word of mouth recommendations. We truly do function as a family unit and love to see how our students can network amongst themselves when they need help inside or even outside of the gym. Our members don’t just train together. They help build the community. Many bring in their friends and family, and even collaborate through their own businesses/work to support one another.
