Today we’d like to introduce you to Derick West.
Derick, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
During my transition out of the military, I faced significant mental challenges. As a family man, I’ve always felt a deep responsibility to provide and lead by example. What I didn’t anticipate was that my determination to guide my children—especially my daughter—would inspire an entirely new career path.
When she shared her dream of becoming an actress, I realized the best way to support her was to step into the world she aspired to join. With no prior experience in the film industry, I decided to dive in headfirst, learning every part of the process alongside her.
Through it all, my wife has been my rock—steady, patient, and endlessly supportive. Her belief in me and our family keeps me grounded and reminds me why I push forward every day.
Coming from the struggles of Kansas City and surviving violence, I’ve learned to count my blessings—and, more importantly, to live them. That perspective drives everything I do today, both as a father and as a creator.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The film industry is only as smooth as you make it. There are countless actors who find success in their own unique ways. Sure, there will always be gatekeepers, but they can only block the path that doesn’t have the real star on it — you. I’ve never been the type to chase trends, so every obstacle I faced became an opportunity for growth. It’s like a process of elimination — if the answer isn’t A, B, or C, then it must be D. Through working with people of all experience levels and backgrounds, I’ve been fortunate to learn, grow, and ultimately discover who I truly am on screen.

I’ve partnered with other entertainers across the DFW area to bring major opportunities to the city. Together, we’re breaking down the gatekeeping culture and creating a space where film is both rewarding and fun. With that mission in mind, DTR TV, our upcoming streaming app, is on the way — built to make a real difference and showcase authentic talent.
