Rising Stars: Meet Tanner Scott of Indsutria

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tanner Scott.

Hi Tanner, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I graduated from the Univerity of North Texas in 2011. Did I use my degree? In a professional capacity, not one time. I kind of fell into the automotiveIn industry after graduation. In 2019, after about a decade in sales, it was time to move on, to move forward. Towards where? I had no idea, but I knew that when I got there I wanted to be in a space filled with creativity. After about two months away from working in sales I found my self at 31 back in school, trade school. The trade was barbering. It met me where I did not know I was, seeking creativity yes, but I found much more. I found community and culture and connection. I finished school and started cutting in Deep Ellum, a neighborhood that fosterd all of that, the creativity, the community, the culture, the connection. After six years in Deep Ellum, this past August I found my self fortunate enough to be forming my own studio in the neighborhood. So this year Industria started, and I say started because its not finished, and if I have it my way it never will be. I prefer eternal evolution over glory of the goal reached. Industria is latin for “to build within,” its a persons deligence in buiding or creating something through continued acts of hard work. That’s my story, work, I want to work forever. Work on myself, work on uplifting others, work on goals, work on growth, work on learning, work on evolving, work on being kind, work on creating. Just good hard work.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Smooth road? Whats that? Kidding, kidding, of course. The road is never smooth for the entire ride right, and personally I prefer the rough ride; not in the moment maybe but in reflection? Without a doubt!! I think for me as a creative the greatest struggle has probably been patience in the processes required when opening a business. We dream and then we do. That is the quintessence of art and creativity. Struggles are where some of the greatest opportunities for growth wait for us.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I think the answer your looking for is business owner and barber, and I do not like words like boss or owner, you cannot own creativity, you must surrender to it; and the other artists at Industria I’m not their boss, I am their supporter. There to push, to pursue, together. To build within oursleves and to build within others. Specialize in… building would be the most accurate answer in my opinion. Building confidence in my clients as a barber, building a creative space for other artists. I am most proud of the pride the artists at Industria have in the space when they bring their clients in. What sets US appart is the diversity of art that we all create. Mens hair, womens hair, makeup, waxing, nails, tattoos. We are not just one thing but we are just one thing… artists.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
Everyone!! My clients, the other artists within Industria, other entrepreneurs, other professionals in the hair industry. I could name so many names, but I would say Ashley a barber who works at Industria, she has been riding these not always so smooth roads with me since Industria started and I have been fortunate enough to work with and have her as a friend now for about 5 years. Then there is Amber who owns Glossed Collective, a hair studio in Allen and Henny who owns Senor Brims, a barbrshop in Allen. That is the tripod for me. Ashley has to pretty much deal with me every day, which is probablly a challenge in and of itself. So I met Henny through Amber and we have been having these supportive collaborative coffee sessions. We are just there for each other, which is really amazing for how fresh the foundation of our conversations are.
