Meet Mel Remmers of Mel Remmers Studio in North Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mel Remmers.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Mel. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Four years ago, as a result from recovering from cancer and surgery, I was left with anxiety and depression. It was starting to make me feel like this result was more debilitating than the physical illness. At this point my doctor strongly advised medication. I wanted this to be a last resort so I joined a gym and started working out. I joined Insanity, Spin and Pilates five times a week for over a year. All it did was leave me feeling exhausted for the rest of the day and I was still waking up with extreme anxiety at 4 am every morning.

I became desperate to find relief and regain joy in my life. So one day when I was walking through the grocery store, I picked up some kid paints and brushes. I had always wanted to try and paint and maybe it was worth a shot now. I have been a creative person all of my life in different ways from designing and remodeling older homes, up-cycling furniture and being a Vintage Clothing Buyer for several stores in the U.S. I also knew I had a good eye for playing with color, light and textures so I went home and posted on Instagram my first attempt at painting. I forewarned my friends and family not to laugh, this was merely an trial.  Then to my shock, no one laughed but were amazed and questioned that I had never painted before. It turned out better than anyone imagined, especially me. I became instantly hooked.

The next morning I woke up not with anxiety but with excitement to try another painting. From that day, February 28, 2015, forward I have painted every single day and I sold my first painting after only four weeks of my new discovery- becoming an artist . As of Nov 2017, I sold my 400th original painting. I still wake up and cannot believe that I am able to do what I am doing. I have become so connected to my painting. When I am not painting I am thinking of painting. This has been the greatest time of my life.. right in the middle of my life.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I have to say that this has been an adventure for sure. I took my first and only art class in Paris five months after I started. I left the private class discouraged because I was told to measure, find a point of interest and draw before I paint. I am in no way a technical person. I don’t sketch or plan. All the things I was instructed to do I have never done and it went against how I was instinctively finding myself through each painting. So I decided that I would never take another class and to keep on discovering in my own way.

I find new materials or mediums and take them to my studio and just become absorbed with figuring out how to use them the way I want to use them. I enjoy making mistakes. I have never You Tubed how to do a process. I want to see where the flow of the painting will take me. The different mediums and color take it to the next level and then the next level, that is the magic, that is the healing, that is the joy in the work.

At first, I found watercolor difficult because of needing the patience to allow the color to find its way through the water on to the paper. I had to let go of the control and once I did, I discovered a new world that I have become completely captivated by.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Mel Remmers Studio – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Mel Remmers Studio is my website where I am selling PAINTED PRINTS. These are prints produced on high-quality textured paper and I embellish the prints by applying added paint to them. I want to allow different price points for people to buy an original piece of work. No two prints are the same, I paint each one a unique way. So each print is still an original. The prints feel original because the paper feels like thick canvas and applied paint make it look almost better than the original. The best part is each customer can choose the size that best fits their space.

My Instagram account @melremmers has become the main vehicle for my work. This has made it possible for my work to be international as I am currently in 12 countries. Instagram has become part of my process. I film the making of my work and I don’t feel like a painting is finished until I have posted it. I also love seeing my work framed and styled in their new homes that they share as well. This morning I woke up to “Moving Kate” which was shared on an account in the UK, it’s so thrilling. All of my work, growth, search for beauty and my personal healing journey is all being documented.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
The future for me is the next painting. I try to enjoy each moment. The fact that something is hidden inside me that was created out of pain is something I will always cherish and never take for granted.

I do continue to challenge myself so I can grow and continue to create. The big plans for 2018 is a bigger canvas… walls. I have some exciting clients I am working with to create hand-painted wallpaper.
