Inspiring Conversations with Joseph Upton of Rebuild And Restore Roofing

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph Upton.

Hi Joseph, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I started out in the hospitality industry, but when COVID hit, I was out of a job. A good friend of mine got me a position as a project manager at a small roofing company in Dallas. During that time, I learned the ins and outs of the business. I really enjoyed solving problems as they came up, coordinating trades, and building relationships with homeowners and insurance companies. I excelled within the company, becoming a top-performing employee and selling over a million dollars in sales within a year. I eventually felt like I hit a ceiling within the company and felt a calling to stretch myself and start my own business.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
With roofing, storm season falls in Q2, which accounts for about 80% of the business. I started the company in the slowest quarter, Q1. I like to joke and say no one wants a roof from Thanksgiving to New Year’s—everyone is thinking about the holidays, not home renovations. I remember being 60 days in and asking myself, “Did I make a mistake?” I just kept pushing through with my head held high, and eventually things started to come together.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Rebuild and Restore Roofing is a family-owned, DFW-based company specializing in storm damage restoration. DFW is the second-largest market in the United States for wind and hail damage. We are an insurance claim specialist company that helps homeowners get everything they deserve through their insurance so their home can be restored to pre-storm condition. We handle repairs and replacements for roofs, gutters, fences, interior damage, Sheetrock, garage doors, solar, and more—anything related to weather damage. What sets us apart is that we are not storm chasers; we are locally owned and operated. We aren’t a large company with maxed-out overhead trying to sell to private equity and maximize profits. We choose people over profit.

How do you think about happiness?
I love my family. I have a beautiful wife who is my world. She’s passionate about education and holds her EdD. We have two children—a two-year-old daughter, Levi Grace, and a seven-month-old son, John Luke. We love to travel and are going to the Winter Olympics in February. We also love Europe and have been to Italy three times. I have a heart for Eastern Europe as well—we traveled to Estonia, and I loved it. Beyond travel, we serve at our church, where my wife and I help lead a premarital class. We’ve been doing that for four years now and absolutely love it.
