Today we’d like to introduce you to Jorge Vasquez.
Hi Jorge , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My brother Diego and I started Vasquez Jiu Jitsu three years ago in 2023 in my garage with some puzzle piece mats and a dream we were in the garage for about 11 months until we were able to sublease a space in downtown Grand Prairie on Main Street after our sublease was over the Land Lord gave us a opportunity to continue with a one year lease to see if we can continue to grow and which we were able to at the end of that year We expanded the gym from 800 ft.² to about 2400 ft.² and that’s where we are currently Diego and I are both Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black boats under Danny Alvarez out of Arlington Texas. I Jorge Vasquez have been training for about 14 years and Diego Vasquez has been training for close to nine years. Vasquez Jiu Jitsu is truly a small family business where my wife Ashley Vasquez is involved. You can come to the gym on any given day and see all three of us working on the mats or the front desk, including my daughter Maxine with the help of our students and community supporting us and giving us a lending hand every step of the way. A brief story of whywe decided to open up Vasquez Jitsu‘s is in large part due to our mother Dr. Angelica BENAVIDES molding us to be entrepreneurs and legacy builders since childhood so with the combination of our passion for Brazilian Jiujitsu and the impact that made on our lives, we wanted to combine our efforts of entrepreneurship, Community building and martial art arts with vasquez Jiu Jitsu
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road, but nothing worth pursuing will be smooth. The biggest obstacle at the beginning was self limiting beliefs if we’re able or capable of opening a gym and slowly we just deal with the growing pains of any martial art/small business, but because of our martial art background in constant pursuit of self improvement in Jiu Jitsu some days are good. Some days are bad but you’re always looking to improve. Every obstacle we’ve overcome has built our confidence as business owners so we are grateful for the bumps in the road.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Vasquez Jiu Jitsu is a martial arts Academy in downtown Grand Prairie, Texas. We specialize in Brazilian jiu-jitsu but we also offer classes in kickboxing and we also have a judo program. We have a unique curriculum that separates us from other martial arts academies where we emphasize in problem-solving through task based training as opposed to step-by-step, traditional instruction. Utilizing a scientifically backed curriculum, called the constraints led approach. we are pioneering this method in the DFW with our martial arts program. Besides our amazing curriculum we are very proud of our family based community where all walks of life are welcome beginner to elite athlete.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
We are lucky to have had amazing mentors in our life, including our mother, our Jiujitsu coach and many others that guided us to our current stage in life when it comes to finding a mentor you would definitely want to find someone that has stepped out of their comfort zone and reached the level of success you would like to reach Observing those around. You is a great way to get advice in life positive and negative networking has been a great asset in our business through meeting like-minded people and having many resources. I was given a piece of advice one time don’t be afraid to ask others how they reached success and we take that advice and definitely use it to help us push our boundaries of what we’re capable when we ask those that have already paid the way.
