Rising Stars: Meet Team Effort of Deep Ellum

Today we’d like to introduce you to Team Effort.

Hi Team, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Team Effort is a band defying boundaries of genre and conventional approach to music & expression. We describe our sound as ‘Noise with some real Force.’ The core members of the group are: frontman- Cy Samons (‘Cy Fangs’), drummer- Jeremy Marshall (“Big Jerm”), and lead guitarist- Noah Caywood. We’re just a few people who have been deeply affected by music throughout our life and when we come together to make music it’s like we’ve found ourselves in a completely new way. There’s nothing like it and it’s a very special feeling… a very special group. It’s even more special when u get to capture that feeling that’s private between just a few people and show it to others. Thats what we do and we have a lot in store. We’re more focused on whats around the corner than anything else right now –

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Theres been alot of challenges. But that’s OK. We’ve had so many obstacles back to back 1 thing after the other- it’s never ending it seems. We have little things like people cancelling on us or people flaking last minute, we will have more established people try to strong-arm us, people not taking us seriously because we’re a band, venues won’t pay us even though we fill the room, middle-men taking all the profit or credit for our work, people riding our coattails and swooping in at the last minute to steal what we worked for… even personal stuff, people judging us or disregarding us because of how we look or act or our age or because we don’t present ourselves “professional” in the same way as the typical business model… I think the worst challenge is losing friends. We’ve lost a few already and we’re not even far yet lol… Its really hard. But we’re learning to just take 1 thing at a time. We’re expanding our team but narrowing our trust. People will see your potential and try to profit off of it, or they’ll put you in a position where you’re seemingly ‘dependent’ on them for progress, which is never true.
We’re learning that no matter what you see, there’s hope that’s unseen, you just have to protect your optimism. It’s really easy to get angry and let your anger cloud your judgment, but that’s why we have eachother, that’s why we have friends around us to keep us pushing and to fall back on. That’s why we stuck with the name Team Effort. Its a reminder. Effort team team effort. Effort. Team. Rearrange it any way and it says something valuable.
We have high hopes and an intense ambition I would say, but at the end of the day, the TEAM comes first. And the team, we’ve found, are the people who love you, don’t judge you, trust you and want what’s best for you.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
At its core, Team Effort is a band and we make music and its a… team effort. We specialize in performance, in other words, our specialty is creating memorable experiences. People confuse us for a lot of things because we are a lot of things. Ultimately, its a “team-based” approach to making art. We wouldnt classify ourselves only as a band because we are so many things and, since it’s early, we have the luxury of establishing our identity on our own before anyone else can do it for us. We are a platform for other artists, we work with a whole team of multi-talented people who are all doing their own thing and when we come together it enhances the experience for us all and acts as a bridge to put people in new environments or provide people with an outlet… we immerse ourselves in our art and thats what the “team” is supposed to be, amongst other things. We do magazine work, direct videos, styling, graphic design, listening parties, performance art… anything you need we can do… we have the resources of a creative agency. Let me not get into specifics yet cause there’s a lot of competitors listening lol… But I will say, listen to the music and you will catch a glimpse. That’s our primary quality… that’s our core.

What matters most to you?
Your Expression. Imagination. The ability to Create and have untapped potential turn into something true and remarkable. This is what makes us human. This is human capability. As far as your imagination reaches, you can take. Our Expression reveals the soul. The soul is hidden when we are unable to express. We need to understand ourselves, our soul.
Society doesnt protect Expression and Imagination. They may talk about it in a positive light at times, but they dont encourage a life led by these qualities. We forget our sense of humanity when we dont cherish these qualities, we forget our sense of wonder, we become robotic- working to work, tired and fearful…this results in a comfortable lifestyle- hiding away in material things.
Anyways… on a less serious note…
the TEAM, friendship, Jeremy’s dog Chanel…
