Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniel Yang.
Hi Daniel, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born in Korea into a family with a long lineage in traditional Korean medicine. My grandfather served within the royal medical system and worked closely with the royal court. He was also a scholar devoted to preserving classical medical knowledge, including medical records connected to the Joseon Dynasty such as Seungjeongwon Uibo. Through him, our family inherited traditional herbal prescriptions that were historically used to support health and longevity.
My father originally studied architecture, but under my grandfather’s influence he chose to become a doctor of Korean medicine instead. He practiced for more than 60 years, continuing and refining our family’s herbal tradition.
I first pursued a career in fine art and later became a university professor. However, growing up in a family of physicians meant that medicine was always part of my life. Watching my grandfather and father treat patients had a lasting influence on me, and over time I felt called to continue that tradition.
I later studied alternative and folk medicine internationally and eventually continued my formal education in the United States. I earned my Master’s degree in Oriental Medicine and Acupuncture in California and received national board certification (NCCAOM).
After becoming licensed, I provided free treatment at a public health center in Los Angeles, serving underserved communities. In 2019, I was recruited to work in Dallas, and in 2024 I opened my own practice, Sun & Moon Clinic.
My mission is to combine traditional East Asian medicine with modern clinical understanding to treat chronic and complex conditions.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not been easy. Moving to the United States meant adapting to a new language and culture and rebuilding my practice from the beginning.
There were financial challenges and long hours. However, many former patients found me again and continued their treatment with me. Seeing patients who have suffered for many years finally begin to improve has been my greatest motivation.
Medicine requires patience and commitment. Results speak louder than words.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Sun & Moon Clinic focuses on chronic and difficult conditions, including autoimmune disorders, digestive diseases, women’s health concerns, and both acute and chronic pain.
Our approach is not protocol-driven. We diagnose and treat each patient individually. For pain, our goal is not temporary relief but restoring balance so the condition does not return.
One major distinction is our in-house Apothecary Bar. I personally prepare customized herbal formulas using high-quality herbs sourced internationally. Many of our formulas are rooted in classical medical texts and traditional Korean royal prescriptions that have been refined through generations of my family’s clinical experience.
Every prescription is individualized. We do not rely solely on textbook formulas. Each patient receives a personalized treatment strategy based on their unique condition and constitution.
We also integrate multiple acupuncture styles, including traditional techniques, Five Elements acupuncture, scalp acupuncture, and electro-acupuncture. Our philosophy is to treat the whole person—body, mind, and spirit—and to create a calm healing environment where patients can continue their care with tea and conversation after treatment.
I am most proud that many patients come to us after trying other treatments without success.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Integrative medicine will continue to grow. Patients are increasingly seeking treatment that addresses the root cause of illness, not only symptom management.
Collaboration between Eastern and Western medicine will continue to expand. However, true lineage-based classical training is becoming increasingly rare. Traditional knowledge is at risk of being simplified or commercialized.
I believe the future of our field depends not only on innovation, but also on preservation and responsible transmission. For this reason, I have committed to mentoring the next generation through a direct apprenticeship. He is currently completing formal medical training and licensure. When he is fully prepared, I intend to train him closely in our family’s methods and clinical philosophy and support the expansion of our work into additional locations.
In this way, the knowledge passed down through my family can continue to serve patients for future generations.
