Community Highlights: Meet Khadijah Johnson of Texas Care Stop 6

Today we’d like to introduce you to Khadijah Johnson.

Hi Khadijah, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always cared about helping children and families, but I kept seeing how hard it was for parents to actually get support when they needed it, especially with Medicaid.

That’s what led me to open Texas Care Stop 6 here in East Fort Worth.

From the beginning, the goal was simple. Make it easier for families to get help. We go to them, in their homes, at school, or out in the community, so parents aren’t stuck trying to figure everything out on their own.

We had to build everything locally. Relationships, trust in the community, and a steady flow of referrals. Over time, that started to grow. Families began referring others, partnerships started forming, and we gained momentum.

Today, I’m still involved day to day. Talking with parents, supporting our team, and staying connected to the community. This work is personal. It always has been.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it hasn’t been smooth at all.

When you’re building something in behavioral health, there’s no clear roadmap. Credentialing, insurance, compliance, staffing. A lot of it you figure out in real time, and sometimes the hard way.

Staffing has probably been the biggest challenge. This work requires people who actually care, not just someone filling a role. Finding the right fit takes time, and when someone leaves, you feel it because the families feel it too.

There were also moments where I questioned everything. Whether this was the right move or if we were doing too much too fast. That doubt is real.

Running a business while trying to maintain quality care is a lot. Some days it’s overwhelming, but you still have to show up and keep things moving.

At the same time, those challenges made us better. We paid closer attention to what was working and stopped forcing what wasn’t.

I don’t think struggle means you’re doing something wrong. It just means you’re in it.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Texas Care Stop 6?
Texas Care Stop 6 is a behavioral health clinic in East Fort Worth. We work with children, teens, and families, focusing on skills training, counseling, and case management.

What sets us apart is how we deliver services. We don’t ask families to come sit in an office. We go to them, in their homes, at school, or out in the community. That makes a big difference. A lot of families have tried to get help before, but life gets in the way. Transportation, work, other kids. When you take that pressure off, things actually start to work.

We also move quickly. Families aren’t waiting months to get started. When a child needs support, timing matters.

A lot of the kids we work with are dealing with behavior challenges at home or school. We focus on building skills they can actually use in real life, not just in a session. And we work with parents too, because you can’t support a child without supporting the family around them.

We accept Medicaid, and that’s important to us. The families who need this support the most should be able to get it without worrying about cost.

What I’m most proud of is the trust we’re building in the community. Most of our growth comes from referrals. Families telling other families, partners reaching out, people sharing our name. That only happens when you’re consistent and doing right by people.

At the end of the day, we’re not trying to be everything to everyone. We just want families in Fort Worth to know that if they need support, we’ll come to them and we’ll do the work.

What matters most to you?
What matters most to me is making sure families feel supported and not alone.

A lot of people don’t realize how isolating it can be when your child is struggling and you don’t know where to turn or if anyone is actually going to show up. That stays with you.

I care about being consistent. Not just starting services and disappearing, but staying with families and doing the work over time. That’s when you start to see real change.

It comes down to trust. If families trust us, we can help. And if we can help, that’s what matters.
