Daily Inspiration: Meet Garo Avanessi

Today we’d like to introduce you to Garo Avanessi.

Hi Garo, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have always had a passion for music and grew up playing various instruments such as the piano, trombone, and guitar. I was introduced to DJing from a friend in highschool, as his brother had a set of turntables and big speakers in their basement. We would regularly take turns playing on the turntables while playing video games. Shortly after high school, I started getting to clubs and bars in DC as some of my friends were promoters. In the early 2010’s I landed my first DJ residency in a club called Josephine. After several years there, the owners had sold the business and the new owners brought in their own DJ’s. After the DC night life, I shifted my passion and energy to private events.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have certainly been ups and downs, slow times and busy times. I would say the hardest time was shifting from DC clubs and bars into private events.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My company, Starscape Entertainment, focuses mainly on live entertainment as a DJ, professional lighting and special effects, and high quality photobooth and prints. We are a husband and wife team that operates the business as we are both very hands giving a very personalized experience. Even if I am sending one of my trainee DJ’s to an event, I still handle all the pre event consultations, crafting the timeline, and collaborating on playlists with my clients. We ensure every detail is thought out ahead of time and we clearly outline our responsibilities with our clients, so there is no grey area.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I love playing sports and instruments. You could almost always catch me with a walkman/mp3 player and a pair of headphones on at any time.
