Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Brines.
Hi Amy, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I never tried to become an artist but my mural business found me. I started painting during a difficult season of my life. I was running another successful business, but when life fell apart, I had no words left in me and my desires shifted. The only way I knew how to breathe was when I was painting a mural in my home. It happened organically as though I was compelled. Then one day, someone came into my home and saw my work. He looked me in the eye and said, “whatever you are doing in your life right now, stop it and do this. This is what you are meant to do.” I shared photos of the work I had done in my home and immediately began receiving requests. That is how She Draws On Walls began.
I believe that “you don’t know what you don’t know”, so I found a successful working muralist to speak with. I wanted to learn from someone in the field. That began a wonderful partnership that led to an invitation to paint a mural at the Fort Worth Museum of History & Science. Now, 4 years later, She Draws On Walls completed an 8-series public art installment at the new Keller Sports Park with the same artist as the FWMHS. I have learned so much and am grateful to now collaborate with amazing people that I continue to learn from.
There is so much more I could share! 😉
PS I am also a single mom of 3. Not sure where I would share that but it is a very important piece of the story of where I am today. She Draws On Walls is my only income. I am currently partnering with a group of experts exploring how I can pour into future and emerging artists.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Surprisingly, yes. It has been a smooth road. I am grateful that I spent 10 years as an entrepreneur, working through and developing the skills I needed to handle and even love the ups and downs of entrepreneurship. I have seen many doors open in front of me that I could not have opened myself. I am beyond grateful for the career that God has led me to and see Him taking care of me daily in my business.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I paint large scale fine art murals. I do not have one category of mural I specialize in, my portfolio is very diverse.
I do particularly love to paint marble inspired walls and imbed cracked glass, metallic paints and golf leaf into the painting.
More than anything I am known for the way I work with my clients. I am highly collaborative and I love to walk alongside my client to help them discover their vision and then bring it to life. My work is extremely tailored to each individual client- I make sure to include things in their mural that are special to them. Sometimes that is painting their own dog into the mural, or in several cases, recreating their late father’s signature into their logo or hidden into the mural. My work is thoughtful and layered. I am not looking for a place for “my” art. I am simply drawing out the art and letting it shine.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
I have always loved to travel. My favorite memories growing up were experiences that expanded my imagination or changed my perspective on life. Beautiful sunsets, trips to see the tall redwoods of Sequoia National Forest, the crisp smell of the mountains in the morning, or the jovial creative burst of a Broadway play. I have always appreciated beauty and am grateful that now, in quiet moments and brushstrokes, I get to add more beauty to the world around me.
