Today we’d like to introduce you to Mia Black.
Mia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was a young lady in middle school watching beauty gurus such as Bethany Mota, Jeanine Amapola, and Sarai Jones post content on YouTube. Their beauty tips and tutorials inspired me to start doing my own. Now, at the time I wasn’t creating content quite yet, but it definitely sparked the idea.
When I started to receive validation from people at school, I seriously started to consider creating content myself. It wasn’t until High School when I started posting makeup looks and my reviews. But I wasn’t consistent until college using the creator platform Influenster. From there I slowly started getting attention from different brands. The first brand to notice me was Too Faced for their Better Than Sex mascara ( I still use it till this day) on twitter. I felt like I had won the lottery I was so excited! Little did I know that was only the beginning.
Fast forward to now, I have worked with various brands big and small. I’m not only getting gifted products anymore; I’ve been put on PR lists, I’ve negotiated paid brand deals! Living in the DFW area has brought me even more opportunities! More recently, companies invite me out to their events. I’m talking soft openings, grand openings, special events, etc.
I’m truly grateful for how far I’ve come. It’s empowering to know that the same brands I desired to work with growing up want to work with me! Not only that, but local businesses see my talent as well. I would not have gotten this far without the support of my mother and friends!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The journey was not linear, definitely was a rollercoaster. I struggled with consistency more than anything. That’s the only way to grow a platform organically. I experienced a few fake brand deals, this was a struggle at first because some of them were difficult to detect as a scam. Another prominent struggle I had was learning when to give myself permission to just live! Everything is content, but it doesn’t need to be. Constantly working 24/7 unintentionally led to burnout, I had to learn to allow myself days off and to live in the moment.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a content creator/influencer. Overall I create lifestyle content. I post about anything from beauty, food, and social events. I’m known for my nightout vlogs and makeup looks more than anything. I’m most proud of myself, putting yourself out there is not easy. I had to build the confidence up to just post my content, it may not always be perfect, but that’s what makes it authentic. I set myself apart from others by being me. There isn’t and never will be anyone like me. I think my humor and video edits help me stand out!
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
My advice to anyone starting out is to not overthink it. Set a schedule, plan the content, or at least have an idea of what direction you want to go with your content. It doesn’t need to be perfect it just needs to be YOU.
One thing I wish I knew starting out is that creating content is not a numbers game. Meaning, it doesn’t matter how many followers you have! As long as your video resonates with someone it can take you much further than your followers count.
