Today we’d like to introduce you to Derrick Butts.
Hi Derrick, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
The pieces of your life help identify the purpose of your life.
From childhood to today, I’ve found myself in positions where I had to master the role of being number one at being number two. That’s why I believe you don’t need a title to be a leader — yet you must respect the space and understand how to function both as a man of authority and under authority.
I run a business called Assist U2 Win. Today, I am in complete alignment. I speak, I coach, and I train for a living. In every setting I walk into, I show up to provide the spark and the strategy a leader needs to win on another level.
I am Derrick Butts.
A graduate of Arlington Martin, I’m the youngest of three and the husband and father of three. Growing up with parents who both retired from the Air Force, I’ve traveled the world — and that upbringing gave me a diversity that allows me to fit into virtually any setting life places me in. The only ones I haven’t quite mastered yet are those where English isn’t the primary language. I’ve spoken through an interpreter, but it’s not my preferred method — and I’m working on it.
I am an advocate for women leaders and for the underdog. I believe deeply in coaching and development. More than anything, I want to see people pursue and chase their dream — not just their job.
There’s a big difference.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Here’s your section cleaned up for the magazine:
The road has been just like the roads here in Dallas — sections of smooth, portions of potholes, and somewhere along the way, a stretch still under construction. That’s been my journey.
It started out pretty smooth. At Martin High School, I was named MVP of District 9-5A in 1996 and was crowned Homecoming King. From the outside, I had it all together. I had multiple scholarship opportunities to play basketball. But even then, I hated the skin I was in — I just learned how to mask it.
I’ve been a storyteller my entire life, but unfortunately, not every story I told was true or accurate. Most of them kept people impressed but distant from the real me. I didn’t know who I was, and I was terrified of disappointing anyone I encountered.
Fast forward — I married, and seven years later, we divorced. It caught a lot of people off guard, including me. It was never the intention, but if you’re not careful, life will throw you curveballs — some from the outside, some self-inflicted. God was gracious and allowed me to remarry. I brought a daughter into that union, my wife brought two sons, and we built a blended family. We’ve been married fifteen years, and all three of our kids are adults doing well.
The road of ministry followed a similar pattern. I mentioned the scholarship offers — what I didn’t mention is that during my senior year, I met a man named Scott Wilson who inspired me toward ministry. I walked away from basketball and began building my life around that calling. In my twenties, I planted a church in Lancaster called Chosen Generation while completing Bible school at Southwestern Assemblies of God University. Why would I do that? Because I genuinely felt the leading of the Lord.
I was a young man full of passion — but not yet full of wisdom. We grew to a congregation of about seventy-five adults. And then I made a mistake. I was single, I loved the Lord, and I found myself in a moment of passion with a woman from the congregation. I couldn’t believe it. I had sinned. I felt so convicted that I made the decision to shut the church down and merge with another congregation. I wanted to get help, and I refused to lead people while I was in that state.
I stayed in ministry, but I never quite bounced back. I had moments of total surrender alongside moments of missing the mark — and that cycle lasted the better part of a decade. The pivotal turning point came when I was fired from what was then the fastest-growing church in DFW. That moment sent me into the automotive industry, where I would spend the next twenty years building a life for my family.
And honestly? That industry gave me some of the best ministry I’ve ever received — just not from a pulpit. It rewarded my charisma while developing my character, and it finally removed the need to please people.
How much time do we have?
I’ll say this — I can’t end the story here. Today, I’m back serving in the local church, and I’m training and developing sales leaders across Texas and Oklahoma. The road is still being built.
