Today we’d like to introduce you to Sage Decay.
Hi Sage, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have always been drawn to art in just about every aspect of my life. I have done every job under the sun. Almost 7 years ago, I was introduced to my tattoo mentors. I started by helping around the studio; anything that needed to be done. Being around such strong artists day in and day out really spoke to me. That’s how I knew that this is exactly where I was supposed to be and what I was supposed to be doing. I started my apprenticeship 5 years ago. I have become a full time tattoo artist and haven’t looked back.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not always been a smooth road. Even living my dream by making a living making my art and helping people, there have been some difficult times. I have learned to navigate through the tough times, as well as making sure that each client has the best experience while we change their skin. Luckily, I am surrounded by amazing artists and friends that have helped me along the way. I have worked through some tough times to be able to get to where I am now in my journey.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a queer tattoo artist that specializes in blackwork tattoos. I love to do any kink/LGBTQIA+/horror themed tattoos. I am a very proud member of the kink/LGBTQIA+ community and I am very honored be able to provide a safe space for the members of the community as well as provide some badass art.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
One of my favorite stories to tell my clients is how I first started to actually tattoo. I was working in a retail job, my current tattoo mentors would shop there from time to time and we would always have great conversation. One night, my mentor came into my job and we spoke about her finding some front desk help. As nonchalantly as possible I offered to help. That night I went to help out and just kept coming back. I was at the studio as much as possible. Eventually, I started to learn to actually tattoo. Even with “unlucky” tattooed on my knuckles, I feel very lucky to be able to be in the position that I am. I suppose it’s right place right time/ dedication/ luck.
