Today we’d like to introduce you to Maiya Dalton.
Hi Maiya, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, and that will always be home in the deepest sense of the word. Detroit shaped my resilience, creativity, and grit. The culture, the people, and the lessons I learned there filled my cup in a way no other place could. It is where my roots live, and it continues to influence how I move through the world today.
I began my professional journey in Detroit, first working for an automotive company and later transitioning into a role with a marketing firm. Around 2022, as the world was coming out of COVID, I made the decision to relocate to Dallas. It was not a perfectly mapped-out plan. I had visited before, and something about the city felt calm, warm, and aligned with what I needed, so I took the leap.
After moving to Dallas, I continued growing professionally while exploring new creative and entrepreneurial paths. I transitioned into school business, served as an operations manager for a restaurant, explored a small jewelry business, and continued growing in modeling. That season became far more transformative than I expected. Life shifted in major ways, and I found myself letting go of versions of myself that no longer fit. It was a period that challenged me, stretched me, and helped me see myself in a completely new light, something I will be sharing more openly in an upcoming podcast episode launching in May.
Creatively, I was first known for being in front of the camera through modeling, even though that was not the original plan. What started as an unexpected opportunity became a space where I built confidence, found my voice, and stepped into visibility in a new way. But as I evolved, so did my purpose. I became more drawn to what was happening behind the scenes: the vision, the storytelling, the structure, and the creation of meaningful experiences.
That shift led me into creative direction, production management, and strategy, and ultimately to founding Mai Healing Spaces. Today, my work is centered on creating intentional experiences rooted in care and emotional transformation for women and girls. My journey has not been linear, but every chapter has shaped me. At this stage in my life, I am less focused on being seen and more focused on creating spaces where others feel seen, supported, and empowered to grow.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it has not been a smooth road. Relocating to Dallas meant starting over completely. I moved without family, without close friends, and without the kind of support system people often assume I had. From the outside, things may have looked put together, but behind the scenes, I was carrying a lot on my own.
There were seasons that challenged me mentally, emotionally, and financially. At one point, I was diagnosed with chronic PTSD, and I had to learn how to keep moving forward while also learning how to care for myself. I was also funding my own dreams while trying to survive. A lot of people see ambition or confidence and assume there must be help behind it, but that was not my reality. I had to build with what I had, and I am still doing that.
Dallas became home because I chose to build a life here, but the truth is, I have also carried the weight of knowing there was very little room for error. If everything fell apart, it would not simply be a matter of going back home and picking up where I left off. I would be starting over all over again. That reality has pushed me to keep going, even in the moments when I felt exhausted, uncertain, or alone.
At the same time, those experiences shaped me in a powerful way. I know what it feels like to move through life without the support you need, and that is a big part of why creating spaces where people can be vulnerable, where they do not feel pressured to perform, and where they can feel grounded and connect with themselves and others in a healthy way matters so much to me. It has not been easy, but every challenge has deepened my purpose.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I describe myself as a creative strategist working at the intersection of vision, storytelling, and execution. That work has led me to serve as a creative director on a range of projects and, more recently, as a production manager for a documentary. I’m known for my ability to see the full picture while also bringing the structure, intention, and follow-through needed to turn ideas into meaningful, well-executed experiences.
I’m also the founder of Mai Healing Spaces, a creative emotional wellness initiative for girls and young women. The work is deeply rooted in transformation, emotional grounding, and expression through art-based experiences. For girls ages 13 to 18, the focus is early prevention and creating space to process emotions before trauma becomes deeply rooted. For young women ages 18 to 24, the focus is restoration, helping them move beyond survival mode, reconnect with themselves, and feel supported in a healthy way.
Through journaling, painting, guided reflection, and movement practices like yoga, I create experiences that help people release, reflect, and reconnect. What I’m most proud of is building something that is both personal and purposeful. What sets me apart is that I do not just create ideas, I create experiences that leave a lasting impact. My goal is for people to feel safe, healthy, supported, and genuinely okay in spaces that encourage healing, happiness, and growth.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I would just say that what people often see is only a small part of the story. There’s a lot of growth, uncertainty, and quiet perseverance that happens behind the scenes, and I think that’s important to acknowledge. You don’t have to have everything figured out to move forward, you just have to be willing to keep going.
I’m also learning that purpose evolves. Who I am today is very different from who I was a few years ago, and I’ve given myself permission to grow and step into new spaces without feeling like I have to explain every transition.
More than anything, I hope people are reminded to choose themselves, to honor where they are, and to create a life that feels aligned, not just one that looks good on the outside.
