Today we’d like to introduce you to Mia Saechao.
Hi Mia, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I got into the beauty industry through my mom. My mom opened a PMU business when I was 13 years old. I used to watch her completely transform womens’ faces. I was deeply inspired by her. I always had always wanted to go into the medical field but I questioned my ability to do well in business. By the time I was in my sophmore year of high school, the covid shut down came. I was not able to have a part time job like regular kids anymore, so I started going to work with my mom. I still had nursing school in the back of my mind (couldn’t go to college because of covid). I started off doing teeth whitening, got certified for body contouring, and even learned how to do PMU as well. But, I didn’t feel as fulfilled. One day I felt that I should try lashing. My mom paid for me to get my esthetician license and I started lashing right away. My first client absolutely back fired on me and I felt a little discouraged. I decided to keep practicing while I pursued real estate and college. Merritt College in Oakland took me in for my pre-nursing courses and real estate did not like me. I didn’t like it either. As I pushed through my pre nursing courses and practicing my lashing. I realized me and lashing worked great together. It was flexible enough for me to do while in nursing school and I enjoy running a business. Being in school while running a business made me realized my joy for the medical field and the beauty industry made me want to pursue aesthetic nursing. That is my final goal. I tell this chaotic story for other young people, that it is okay to try million different routes until you find your calling.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Absolutely not. I have lost many friends along the way. I had a falling out with my mom when I worked with her under Our Secret Beauty Ink. We did not talk for a year and that led me to open up Mayumi Beauty shortly after my grand mother passed whom me and my mom were both very close with. I left a three year and a half relationship, fell out and rekindled me and my mothers relationship, worked as a caregiver and a leasing agent for a year (I took a break from lashing for a year, only practicing on family and friends), before I opened up Mayumi Beauty.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in custom lashing. It is not just a business or job to me but it is a artistic expression. I make sure that I carefully frame each lash set to the client based on their facial anatomy and desires. What sets me apart that I do not focus on money. I focus on community. There are times where clients do not have money for a full set and I still do it for them. There are times when my clients open a business and I makes sure I can promote them. There was a time my client had surgery and no one to pick her up and I got her. It is not just a business, but it is also about relationships. I am most proud on my work ethic. No matter how bad things get, I get up every morning and make it happen to the best of my ability.
How do you define success?
I define success based on purpose. I would say happiness, but it is an emotion. Emotions come and go. Purpose stays. Money will come and go. Money is a tool. Purpose in the context of success is based on achievement and placement in where you are at in your life. Do you know what you want to do for work? Do you know your calling? And there are times calling, purpose change. Work is something that we do all our lives. Just make sure what you choose, you are happy with it.
