Today we’d like to introduce you to Nam Won Kang.
Hi Nam Won, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I am Grand Master Nam Won Kang, the founder of Master Kang’s Martial Arts.
I began my journey in Taekwondo at a young age in Korea and went on to compete at a high level, becoming a World Champion. Through that experience, I learned that Taekwondo is not just about physical skill, but about discipline, resilience, and character.
When I came to the United States, I saw both an opportunity and a gap. Many martial arts schools focused on physical training or short-term programs, without a clear system for long-term personal development.
That realization led me to build something different. I didn’t want to simply run a Taekwondo school—I wanted to create a structured leadership development system through Taekwondo.
Today, that system helps students grow not only as martial artists, but as confident and responsible leaders in their daily lives.
Since opening our Plano location in 2019, we have grown to serve hundreds of students and have developed over 100 Black Belts. In 2024, we expanded to a second location in Allen, continuing to build the same system with consistency and high standards.
We are not just teaching Taekwondo. We are building leaders for life—through a system that is structured, repeatable, and focused on long-term growth.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road. One of the biggest challenges was not the physical or operational side of the business, but establishing a clear standard and system in an environment where many programs were inconsistent or short-term focused.
When I first started in the United States, I realized that many martial arts schools lacked a structured approach to long-term development. Without a clear system, it becomes difficult to consistently develop students, instructors, and the overall culture of the school.
Another challenge was building and maintaining a team that understands and follows the same standards. In any organization, growth creates complexity, and without clear expectations and accountability, consistency begins to break down.
Instead of seeing these as temporary obstacles, I approached them as structural problems that required long-term solutions. This led me to focus even more on building a clear system, setting strong standards, and creating processes that can be repeated and taught to others.
Today, those early challenges have become the foundation of our organization. They pushed us to build a system that is not dependent on individuals, but one that can consistently deliver results over time.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Master Kang’s Martial Arts?
Master Kang’s Martial Arts is a martial arts academy built around a clear and structured leadership development system.
While we teach Taekwondo, our focus goes beyond physical training. We help students build discipline, confidence, and leadership through a simple and consistent system.
What sets us apart is our focus on long-term growth. Our programs guide students from beginner level to Black Belt and beyond, with clear standards and steady progress at every stage.
We are known for helping students grow not only in skill, but in character, responsibility, and leadership they can use in their everyday lives.
One of the things we are most proud of is our consistency. Every instructor is trained to follow the same standards and values, creating a consistent and reliable experience for every student.
As we continue to grow, our goal is to expand this system while keeping the same level of quality, discipline, and leadership across every location.
We are not just teaching Taekwondo. We are building leaders for life through a system that is clear, consistent, and focused on long-term growth.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
We work with individuals and families who are committed to long-term growth, not short-term results.
The best way to get started is to try a class and experience our system firsthand. From there, we guide each student and family through a clear path based on their goals and commitment.
For those interested in working with us as instructors or team members, we look for people who are willing to follow standards, take responsibility, and grow within a structured system. We provide training and support, but we also expect consistency and accountability.
As we continue to grow, we are open to working with people who share the same values of discipline, respect, and long-term development. We are not focused on fast expansion, but on building a strong and consistent system that lasts.
We believe that the right environment matters. When the right people come together with clear standards, real growth happens.
