Today we’d like to introduce you to Ruthie Staalsen.
Hi Ruthie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born and raised in South Africa and traveled all over the world in my childhood. Travel shaped my design sensibility and worldview. I married my high school sweetheart who had a lot of the same background as me. We married and purchased our first home which we totally gutted and remodeled. Friends started asking me if I would help them with their homes so I started keeping records of before and after which created my portfolio. When my girls started school, I launched my website and started blogging about my services. I started doing walk through consultations and it was wonderful to be able to prioritize my family. As they started middle school and high school, I was able to spend more time on my business and took on larger projects. It grew quickly from there and now we do everything from Remodels to full package interior design services.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a bittersweet road. My priority at first was always my family. I had to say no to a lot of amazing projects at first. However, now I am able to say yes. There are seasons in business and right now it’s a thriving time for my business.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I have been in business for 25 years. My focus is on creating spaces that are relaxed and collected with a global influence. I incorporate both bold and delicate pieces to tie a room together and have a keen eye for detail. I have built a dynamic team of creative, like-minded individuals over the years, allowing my boutique firm to remain unique and consistent.
I’m known for my infectious personality, superior sense of style and strong focus on providing quality design services. I am a design influencer and trend setter all over the world. My personal design style has a European flair with an eclectic twist, which is a testament to my extensive world travels.
I also have a knack for utilizing existing pieces within a space to create something completely new, and pride myself my ability to adorn each space with remnants reflective of the life experiences and attributes that define each of my clients, crafting spaces that are both unique, relaxed and inviting.
Ruthie Staalsen Interiors was named as one of the Top Interior Design Experts to watch in 2025. We have been featured in National publications all over the world, including Traditional Home Magazine, Elle Decor and Architectural Digest.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Flexibility is key in this industry. Keeping calm in all situations. In this business there are a lot of moving parts, so lots of things can go wrong. Having a team that is positive and willing to pivot when needed is crucial. I’m fortunate that I have a team that are very similar to me in personality so they are an extension of my brand.
