Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Wengrenovich.
Hi Angela, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I have been a photographer since I was 15 years old. I started taking photography classes in high school where I got the chance to work with film and develop my own images in the dark room. I loved seeing patterns of light in the world around me. I have horrible eye sight, but when I’m looking through the view finder of a camera, then I get to see the world a little more clearly. I can see patterns in the light and I notice people’s features in a way that I don’t when I’m just in the world.
Over the years, my interest in photography would ebb and flow, but I always loved it. When my oldest son was born in 2016, I really started picking up my camera again to photograph his life. And then it became this creative outlet for me. I could do something besides be mom. I started taking online classes again and committed to growing in the art. I took on a 365 project where I photographed the world around me. I started this project in Jan of 2020. Little did I know how small the world would get a few short months later. I had to get real creative to find a different angle to tell a different story every single day when every single day felt like Groundhog Day. I also decided to start a photography business at this time.
Fast forward a bit and we moved from Connecticut to Texas before the birth of our third child. It was a fresh start almost. When people asked me what I did, I said I was a photographer. In 2023, I really took a leap of faith on my business and myself and joined a certification program with Sandra Coan, an award winning photographer and educator. I really honed in my particular lighting, posing and style. I started photographing students at schools in Modern School Photography and photographing dynamic team sports portraits. I truly want the people in front of my camera to see themselves as the people who love them the most see them.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
2020 was a bit of a road bump for all of us, but it was a time of intense growth in my skills as a photographer.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a family, school, and sports photographer in Grapeivne, TX. I specialize in helping people to remember what makes their family, student or athlete unique in this moment in time. I excel in black and white photography and connecting with people to let their true personality shine in the photos. People always think they’re awkward in front of the camera, but I promise you that I can make you feel less awkward with some conversation about what it is that you love and few cheesy jokes in there.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I authentically care about the people that I photograph. I truly want the kids I photograph at schools to be themselves in the photos whether that’s goofy or serious, shy or animated. I want young athletes to remember that they are capable of hard things and I want families to enjoy their time together in this busy world we live in.
