Community Highlights: Meet Karla Vargas of Donkey & Equine Haven, USA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karla Vargas.

Hi Karla, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I came here from Mexico City over 20 years ago. I originally trained to be a chef, but I grew up with horses so it was easy to turn my love for all things equine into a profession, and a non-profit to save and rehabilitate them.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No road is smooth. English is my second language and learning to conduct business had its own difficulties, as well as the immigration process. Learning how to grow a successful business, making those important connections, and understanding how to operate a 501(c)(3) have been an adventure, to say the least. There will always be ups and downs in business, whatever business you choose to build.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My business is called K Equestrian, LLC. I board and train horses at our facility in Celina, TX. We work primarily with Andalusians, or PRE horses. I’m the founder of an charitable organization called Donkey & Equine Haven, USA. We rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome abandoned, neglected, and mistreated equines.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I can’t narrow this down to specific sources, but compassion and empathy are the guiding forces in most every decision taken in both life and business.
