Hi Lawrence “Ton”, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
The Big Easy Brass Band was founded in 2019 by the late Duane “Mudd Nelson and Lawrence “Ton” Colar, The Big Easy Brass Band was born from a shared passion for preserving and promoting the vibrant culture of traditional New Orleans second line music. Rooted in the soulful rhythms and jubilant spirit of the Crescent City, the band carries forward the legacy of the brass band tradition while infusing it with fresh energy and modern flair.
With every performance, The Big Easy Brass Band celebrates the heartbeat of New Orleans—where every note tells a story, every rhythm moves the crowd, and every parade keeps the culture alive. Whether leading a second line through the streets or lighting up a festival stage, the band remains dedicated to honoring the past while inspiring the next generation to keep the music marching on.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No it has not been an easy road especially with the passing of the founder Duane “Mudd” Nelson in 2022. After his passing the band took a year off to figure out our next moves and came back doing it for Mudd.

We play traditional New Orleans jazz. We specialize in spreading the culture of New Orleans Secondline music. We are known for being energetic and getting everyone to have a good time. We are most proud of the bands growth and also the accomplishments we have achieved as one of the only authentic Secondline bands in the DFW metroplex.

What we like best about Dallas is that it’s a very accepting city and they have welcomed us with open arms. It’s not much we dislike because we bring great vibes everywhere.
