Today we’d like to introduce you to Emory Jones.
Emory, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started content creation in 2019 while I was bartending at two different places and living with my parents. My mom is immuno compromised so when covid happened I couldn’t work at the bars anymore. I got unemployment thankfully and focused on making videos full time during lockdown. I started with silly comedy videos and some makeup transitions and such. In college I was a makeup artist so that’s where the “MUA” in my username “EmoryJonesMUA” comes from. It’s been so long I’m afraid to change it now.
I’ve made music basically my whole life. I started writing and performing at age 13 and pursued a career in the industry for the better part of my adolescence but took a break in college to focus on school. I didn’t really want to create music content truthfully. I was afraid of rejection or people thinking I was cringy. But eventually through friends and family encouraging me I started making covers and mashups. My first popular series was “Day 1 of trying to get cosplayers to use my audios”. I created covers and mashups of nerdcore songs from fandoms like Five Nights at Freddy’s and Hazbin Hotel. The series evolved over time and after 200+ songs recorded for it I pivoted to political parody music and original songs.
The nerdcore and fandom communities have been incredibly supportive and welcoming and I’m so glad I landed with them. I even go to conventions now and get to hangout with the cosplayers who have supported me over the last few years.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Content creation is not an easy path to take. It’s full of creepy DM’s, hate comments and threats, and mostly involves throwing content into the void and hoping for a positive result. I’m grateful to have the supportive and positive audience I do but given how often I criticize the government it’s inevitable that I’d get some negative attention as well. You need a thick skin and an ability to let go of what doesn’t serve you.
In addition to the usual stuff I’ve also had some health scares and injuries over the years. I had a severe concussion a couple years back that left me with a temporary stutter. Thankfully I recovered with minimal issues. The problem with content creation and struggle is that you don’t get to stop posting just because you’re hurt or sick. The train keeps rolling even if you’re unable to keep it on the tracks. Consistency is the key to online success. The only difference between someone who makes it and someone who doesn’t is the one who does kept posting,
That being said I am very protective of my personal life. I don’t post my friends or family online if I can help it and I don’t film every waking moment of my life. I keep my content creation to specific windows of time and the rest I use to prioritize the people I care about and my dog Maurice.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in nerdcore music and political parody songs. My most popular would likely be a parody I did of “Awesome God” the Christian song. Mine is called “Your God” and it’s a criticism on the dichotomy of hiding behind religion to justify ignoring those in need, as well as the hypocrisy of following Jesus’ teachings while simultaneously defending actions like mass deportation and wars oversees. Another popular one was the “Stayed Gone (Political Parody)” release. That was a combo of nerdcore and parody music which was really fun. Much like “Your God” it’s a criticism on the current administration and all the damage it’s done but presented in a humorous format. The goal is to keep people aware of what’s going on in the world but in a way that’s catchy, easy to remember, and makes them laugh.
In addition to the nerdcore content I also make original music that’s got an 80’s pop rock vibe. I dropped a song called “Anyone” that I recorded with Jerik Centeno producing, as well as Jackson and Nate VanderPol of Viper Club and Shadow Academy on guitar and drums. We recently recorded two more to be released later this year. “Summer Wonder” will drop sometime in June with a Breakfast Club themed music video and “Space” will drop sometime in the Fall. They are amazing musicians and creatives and I always have a blast working with those boys.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I’m a big YouTube person. I love watching Game Grumps, Smosh, Markiplier, etc. I also listen to music constantly. I’m one of those people who truly listens to everything. Sometimes it’s comedy music like Ninja Sex Party (my fav) and Tom Cardy, sometimes it’s Billy Joel and The Bee Gees, sometimes it’s nerdcore music like The Stupendium and The Living Tombstone and sometimes it’s Djo and Matt and Kim it really depends. Nerdcore and comedy music have my heart truly. What’s crazy is a few of those bands follow me now. It’s been a very kind and supportive community and I like to support other nerdcore musicians when I can. That’s how I see my covers. They’re tributes to the originals and I always make sure to credit them and tag them every time.
