Hi Shalisa, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I first began working in tax preparation while living in Tennessee. After relocating to the Dallas–Fort Worth area in 2014, I spent several years building connections and gaining deeper experience in the tax industry.
A major turning point came when I worked with another tax company in Texas. During that experience, I realized I could serve clients more effectively by creating my own business focused on personalized, high-quality service rather than volume. In 2019, I officially launched Exquisite Tax Service.
The company was built around a “white-glove” approach to tax preparation. I had a vision that by providing not only accurate tax services, but also education and long-term support for individuals and small business owners. I emphasized quality, professionalism, and client relationships as the foundation of the business.
Exquisite Tax Service quickly expanded beyond standard personal tax filing. I was able to offer additional services such as business tax services, credit restoration, life insurance consulting, and year-round financial guidance.
Another important part of the company’s story is community involvement. By owning my own business gave me the opportunity to help provide meals to homeless communities in the Fort Worth and Dallas areas, something I viewed as part of her broader mission of service.
As years passed, I became better known as “the tax fairy,” reflecting the brand personality I built around making taxes less stressful and more approachable for clients.
Today, Exquisite Tax Service operates as a Texas-based tax and financial services company serving clients locally and across all 50 states.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, the road definitely was not smooth.
One of the biggest struggles was starting over after moving from Tennessee to Texas. Once I relocated to Texas, I had to rebuild my client base, reputation, and professional network from scratch in a new market.
Another challenge was balancing entrepreneurship with personal responsibilities. Like many small business owners, I faced the pressure of funding and growing a business while also managing everyday life responsibilities behind the scenes. I had to sacrifice my personal time by working long hours, and uncertainty that come with building a company independently.
Working for another company before launching my own business showed me that company I worked for didn’t prioritize morals and values and I didn’t want to pick up on those practices and systems I didn’t agree with. That experience became one of the motivations for creating Exquisite Tax Service, I wanted to build a company centered on transparency, professionalism, and genuine client care rather than treating clients like numbers.
Like many entrepreneurs I had to earn trust gradually. Tax preparation is highly relationship-driven, and convincing people to trust a newer business with sensitive financial information required consistency, strong customer service, and word-of-mouth referrals over time.
Being a business owner can have its ups and downs about the emotional side of entrepreneurship. I have had many moments of self-doubt, learning curves in business ownership, and the challenge of wearing multiple hats at once: tax preparer, marketer, administrator, customer service rep, and business strategist and the community connector.
Despite those struggles, I framed the obstacles as part of what shaped the company’s culture. The hardships pushed me to focus heavily on, client education, personal relationships, community outreach, and creating a welcoming, judgment-free experience for clients.
That perseverance is a big part of the identity behind Exquisite Tax Service today.

One of the things I love most about our city and the DFW area overall is the opportunity and diversity it offers. It’s a place full of driven entrepreneurs, growing businesses, and people from so many different backgrounds and cultures. There’s a strong sense of ambition here, and I appreciate being part of a community where small businesses can truly grow and thrive. The networking opportunities, local support for entrepreneurs, and the fast-paced growth of the area have all played a major role in helping Exquisite Tax Service expand.
I also love how connected the community can be. There are always events, business mixers, pop-ups, and opportunities to collaborate with other local brands and professionals. That sense of community support and resilience is something I really admire about the city.
If I had to say what I like least, it would probably be how fast-paced and competitive things can sometimes become. With so much growth happening, it can occasionally feel overwhelming for small businesses trying to stand out and maintain work-life balance. Traffic and the constant hustle are definitely challenges as well. But honestly, I see those things as part of the price of being in a city full of opportunity and growth.
At the end of the day, I’m grateful to be building my business in a city that continues to evolve and create space for entrepreneurs like me to succeed.
