Check Out Yunsheng An’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yunsheng An.

Hi Yunsheng, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My art journey began at Dallas Art Therapy, where I discovered that art could express feelings that are sometimes hard to put into words. Through painting and creating, I learned I could communicate emotions visually instead of having to explain them verbally.
During my time there, several people encouraged me to exhibit my artwork. That led me to join the Visual Arts League of Allen as an exhibiting artist. I have now been showing my work in VALA events for a little over a year.
As a blind artist, my work places a strong emphasis on texture. I want people to experience my art not just visually, but through movement, layering, and feeling. My personal art motto is, “Let’s get messy.” I chose that phrase because, as a blind person, I use every tool available to me in the creative process, and sometimes that means embracing experimentation and unpredictability.
When selecting colors for my paintings, I often associate them with elements in the world around me red for fire, green for grass, and blue for water. I also work collaboratively with someone who assists me with the visual aspects of the artwork. Because of this, much of my art is created through collaboration, combining different perspectives and creative strengths.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
As a blind person, I would say the main struggle is experimenting with new colors because sometimes I can’t associate them with anything meaningful.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a blind artist who creates mixed-media acrylic paintings rich in texture and storytelling. Through art, I’ve found a powerful way to express myself. What sets my work apart is that it’s not only meant to be seen—it’s meant to be experienced and enjoyed by everyone, whether they can see or not.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I would say creativity and self-expression are important parts of my success because they allow me to share different ideas, emotions, and experiences in my own unique way. They help me communicate how I understand and connect with the world around me.
